Sysco is looking for a Product Development Manager to join the Merchandising team on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract, reporting to the Senior Product Development Manager.
The Product Development Manager (PDM) makes recommendations to reduce COGs through product optimisation, lean manufacturing and re‑sourcing. Their knowledge of the product, market and processes enables the achievement of the best possible price in conjunction with Purchasing Managers (PMs).
This role offers a hybrid working contract, with 2‑3 days per week in the Ashford, Kent office, so you must be within a commutable distance.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
* Report to the Senior Product Development Manager and work alongside the Product Development Executive for the Centre of Plate category.
* Build strategic supplier relationships.
* Custody tiering attributes and evolve own brand developments for Sysco and subsidiary brands.
* Manage food specification and artwork of new launches, product or supplier changes.
* Drive category sales and margin performance by taking cost out of the products and processes without changing customer perception of quality or performance.
* Ensure the best possible price against each spec.
* Identify opportunities to deliver more value within each spec.
* Understand supplier production processes and recommend best practice.
* Investigate opportunities including pack changes, pack weights, supply chain, re‑sourcing and spec changes.
* Challenge cost increases and mitigate the impact of inflation through process and market improvement.
* Improve product quality at the same price as current product.
* Lead initiatives by owning the critical path and ensuring deadlines are met.
* Attend factory trials and first production runs.
* Benchmark products in the marketplace and propose suggestions based on learning and quality and price.
* Support range reviews and identify products over or under spec with Merchandising Managers.
* Ensure all products are launched within Sysco branding criteria.
* Support all tenders, auctions and re‑sourcing exercises.
* Support the team in strengthening and consolidating the supply base.
About you
The successful candidate will have previous experience in a similar NPD manufacturing / food product role and an extensive food product background. You will possess project management experience, commercial business awareness and the ability to communicate with various levels of stakeholders. You will be able to work independently and as part of a team to achieve your targets.
