An exciting opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to join our dynamic and innovative Acute Oncology Team as a Senior Specialist Nurse. We are looking for a highly skilled registered nurse who has experience of, and is passionate about, delivering high quality cancer and haematology care, specialising in Acute Oncology. The nurse-led Acute Oncology team at Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust works across all Trust sites to include the John Radcliffe, Nuffield and Horton Hospitals. To date, the team's achievements include development of the nurse led service, working together to support patients with complications of cancer and haematology treatments, and related issues, promoting early recognition, pathway management and early supportive discharge.

Main duties of the job
The aim of this post is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care provided to known patients of the oncology/ haematology departments or those with a new or unknown primary receiving clinical attention in non-specialist areas within OUH Trust. This includes:
1. To assist the co-ordination of the Acute Oncology Service, and, with sufficient training, to advise the multidisciplinary team on the appropriate management of acutely unwell haematology/oncology patients working with the Consultant Nurse Lead Acute Oncology Consultant and Haematology Consultant.
2. Provide essential cross-departmental liaison and communication to improve the patient journey and experience, reduce length of stay in hospital and in some cases averting hospital admissions. Communication with GPs will also form an essential part of the post.
3. Ensure appropriate repatriation into the Cancer Centre or referral back to specialist oncology /haematology or palliative services according to clinical need liaising with clinicians, ward coordinators and operational managers.
4. Provide effective and expert support, training and education to staff of the medical units with regards to Cancer Care, in order to support the delivery of skilled evidence-based care to patients in response to local, Trust and National initiatives which underpin safe admission and discharge.
