An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, flexible and well organised individual to join our friendly Cellular Pathology team as a Senior Medical Secretary.
The successful applicant will require previous Medical Secretary experience in a healthcare environment and have excellent organisational and communication skills. You will be able to cope well under pressure and have a good understanding of the patient pathway. You should enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team and be confident liaising with patients, medical staff, general practitioners and referring hospitals.
The post holder will be expected to organise their workload and duties accordingly, in such a way to make a direct and positive contribution to the service, exercising initiative and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role will be to provide support to the Consultant Histopathologists, Laboratory Manager and Laboratory staff within the department. Day to day responsibilities will include booking in patient samples, typing of clinical correspondence and patient appointment letters, preparation of cases for MDT review and the management of referrals to external agencies etc. You will also assist colleagues during in times of leave/sickness.

The department is UKAS Accredited to ISO 15189 and is the 7th best Histopathology laboratory in the country for the percentage of histopathology cases reported within 10 days of receipt, supporting timely diagnosis and treatment.
Job responsibilities
Being an important part of the Medical Secretarial team in Cellular Pathology, you will play an essential role in providing support to Consultant Histopathologists and cover the Senior Medical Secretaries in their absence. The ability to work under pressure whilst remaining calm is essential.
The role of Senior Medical Secretary is to provide full administration and secretarial support to the diagnostic team. To maintain a high standard of service to meet patient needs, producing patient investigation reports, clinical correspondence and external referrals etc and in doing so maintain the trust Cancer Performance Targets and departmental Turn Around Times.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* GCSE English & Maths Grade C or above (or equivalent)
* Word processing skills to RSA III or equivalent level qualification
* Evidence of continued learning and development
* NVQ level 2/3 in Customer Care/Business Administration
* AMSPAR Medical Secretary Diploma or equivalent experience
Experience
* Significant experience working as an NHS medical secretary
* Evidence of using Information Management Systems for accurate data entry
* Evidence of audio /digital typing
* Evidence of experience of office work including filing, printing, typing clinical correspondence/patient appointment letters and handling patient inquiries with sensitivity
* Evidence of knowledge of medical terminology
* Evidence of Personal Administration skills including diary management, letter typing and minute taking
* Evidence of staff training and line management/supervisory experience
* Experience of working in an NHS Histopathology Dept. Histopathology department
* Evidence of using Pathology LIMS systems such as CliniSys Winpath
* Evidence of experience of using G2 Speech for audio typing
* Evidence of NHS specific systems such as ICE or EPR & PAS
* Evidence of experience of writing Standard Operating Procedures
* Working knowledge of NHS policies
