Job description
Flexible working: This is a full-time role with options for flexible and compressed hours. You will be on-site most of the week, with up to 10% home working possible depending on business needs.
About Us
GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber, and security agency dedicated to safeguarding the UK. We utilize advanced technology, ingenuity, and partnerships to identify, analyze, and disrupt threats. Collaborating with MI5 and MI6, we protect against terrorism, cyber-attacks, and espionage. Working at GCHQ offers varied, fascinating work in a supportive, inclusive environment emphasizing teamwork.
The Role
Our infrastructure supports the systems that keep the UK safe. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you’ll leverage your experience with mechanical and electrical systems to ensure standards are met and maintained. You may review building designs, analyze infrastructure issues, or provide technical solutions, working independently or with teams.
You might also oversee small teams, guiding and supporting team members. The role may require extended hours, compensated by overtime, and occasional UK or overseas travel.
About You
You should have a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical (M&E) building systems such as HVAC and HV/LV distribution. Ideally, you are an SME with relevant qualifications like AP electrical or mechanical, or equivalent certifications such as City & Guilds in Electrical Test and Inspection. Practical experience in maintaining, installing, and assuring M&E systems is essential. Leadership experience is beneficial, and a full UK driving license is required.
Training and Development
We provide comprehensive induction, ongoing training, and support for professional development, including qualifications and certifications. Our skills community supports your career growth from day one and beyond.
Rewards and Benefits
Starting salary of £53,496 plus benefits including 25-30 days annual leave, public holidays, performance recognition, season ticket loans, pension scheme, cycle scheme, onsite facilities, and parental leave.
Equal Opportunities
We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups such as women, ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds. More information is available on our website.
Disability Confident
As a Leader in the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme, we commit to fair recruitment practices, including interviews for disabled candidates meeting essential criteria, and offer support through reasonable adjustments.
What to Expect
The recruitment process includes application review, online interviews, and conditional offers. It may take 6-9 months, so applicants are advised to maintain current employment until final offers are made.
Before You Apply
Applicants must be British citizens or hold dual British nationality. The role requires Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance, and applicants should meet eligibility criteria. We do not cover relocation costs, and the role is based in Cheltenham or Manchester, requiring living within a commutable distance. Applications from outside the UK are not accepted until visiting the UK.
We recommend creating a separate, non-identifiable email for correspondence and being mindful of the application timeline, as the closing date may be advanced once sufficient applications are received.
