We are looking for an ENT Consultant Surgeon for a 1-year fixed‑term post who can provide comprehensive general ENT service in a busy acute trust on the outskirts of London.
The successful candidate will bring adequate experience in general ENT and offer clinical skills/interests that complement the needs of the department, with a preference for Benign Head and Neck. They should be competent in all types of routine ENT surgery, including Otology, Rhinology, Paediatric ENT and Head and Neck cancer surgery.
Main duties of the job
* Act as Head and Neck Cancer Lead, managing H+N MDT meetings, planning the MDT, liaising with CNSs, Head and Neck cancer surgeons and oncologists at UCLH and North Middlesex hospitals; and working closely with OMFS and Thyroid Surgery teams to provide care to H+N patients.
* Make independent decisions regarding patient treatment plans and conduct independent theatre sessions across a broad range of ENT conditions.
* Deal with difficult patients in an acute setting and manage their expectations according to treatment plans.
* Provide out‑of‑hours cover for new A&E attendances (Essex network area), ward patients (average 8 patients per week elective/emergency), and elective patients’ emergency attendances.
* Develop a Head and Neck service in line with population and departmental needs.
* Prepare and manage the H+N cancer MDT and attend combined MDT meetings with UCLH.
* Perform diagnostic head and neck surgery and other benign head and neck operations as per skills.
* Supervise and teach specialist doctors at registrar level and GPVTS trainees at junior doctor level.
* Work with GPs to develop community services, guidelines, provide support, teaching, and training.
* Base primarily at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, undertake outpatient sessions at St Margarets Hospital in Epping (SMH) and Herts & Essex Hospital (HEH) in Bishops Stortford; venue may change as required by the Trust.
* Admin time incorporated within each clinic and additional admin time offered.
* Travel time considered; expenses reimbursed per trust expense policy.
* Provide Consultant advice and treatment for a variety of patients, including children, for surgical management of common, non‑specialised ENT problems at PAH.
* Ensure all post‑operative patients have clearly documented instructions for safe and timely discharge.
* Demonstrate professional excellence and efficient delivery of care in view of the clinical caseload.
* Participate in audit and research programmes and take an active interest in the management of the specialty at PAH and Broomfield Hospital.
* Participate in 1:12 on‑call rota with Chelmsford, providing emergency cover for the Essex ENT hub at Chelmsford (Broomfield) Hospital for a one‑week period; supported by rotating middle‑grade surgeons and resident juniors at the hub.
