General Manager - Planned Pathways

We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to take on an exciting leadership role within our Division, leading a broad portfolio of surgical services including ENT, Oral Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, and Endoscopy. The post holder will provide strategic and operational leadership across these services, working closely with clinical and corporate colleagues to deliver high-quality, efficient patient care. A key focus of the role will be driving elective recovery and ensuring sustainable service delivery within agreed financial envelopes. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting and delivering divisional transformation programmes, helping to improve productivity, performance, and patient outcomes across the portfolio.
Job responsibilities
The General Manager will be responsible for overall management and leadership of the designated care groups, working with management teams, clinical leads, matrons and senior AHP leads to develop and evaluate all services within their remit. They will ensure effective and efficient structures are in place to meet standards of patient care, manage risk and governance matters, support the Head of Nursing and Clinical Leads in developing patient‑centred services, meet key financial and operational performance targets, and put in place effective processes for delivering national and local targets. The role involves reviewing the efficiency and effectiveness of services in terms of cost effectiveness and financial flows, identifying and exploiting opportunities for service redesign through relevant service improvement techniques, deputising for the Divisional Director of Operations as required, and participating in the Trust on‑call rota.

Qualifications
* Education to a master’s degree level or equivalent experience
* Recognised postgraduate management qualification or equivalent experience
Experience
* Significant general and operational management experience, including managing a large multi‑disciplinary group of staff, part of which having worked in the NHS.
* A proven record of success in managing significant operational / strategic change while maintaining the provision of a high‑quality service within a clinical setting and multidisciplinary teams.
* Experience of team working and building effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment.
* Ability to fully develop staff potential through facilitating training, development and education initiatives.
* Demonstrable leadership and influence skills.
* Sound budgetary management experience.
* Experience in service redesign and project management.
* Experience working with external organisations (GP practices, social services, community services, local authority, etc.).
* Experience in managing quality, clinical audit, clinical governance and risk management issues.
