Historic New England seeks an experienced Full Stack Developer, responsible for creating robust platforms and digital tools that increase operational efficiency, build brand awareness, and provide exceptional user experiences. Technically skilled and outcome-oriented, the Developer specializes in writing code for both front and back-end applications while functioning as a key member of an information technology team focused on advancing Historic New England’s digital products and services.

Location: New England-based remote
Key Roles and Responsibilities: The Full Stack Developer is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:
* Develops and designs web architecture, middleware, and backend code, comfortable building and/or integrating their own code with existing applications, and experienced working with outside vendors and developers to engineer high-quality integrations.
* Develops code and user interfaces to support Historic New England’s internal systems and web-based platforms.
* Serves as a key member of the project team overseeing ongoing redevelopment of our public-facing websites to align with the organization’s brand refresh, prioritizing continuous feature and user experience improvement.
* Troubleshoots workflow, content and technology issues and provide solutions.
* Identifies opportunities for improved business processes and help architect and implement improvements related to web content management, e-commerce, business systems, CRM, collections management, workflow and project management, and other key business systems.
* Provides backup support for IT helpdesk operation, including troubleshooting code and system functionality issues.
* Identifies bugs and functionality gaps in existing systems; assist in developing workarounds and planning longer-term software improvements.
* Supports implementation and integration of hosted software services, including e-mail marketing, marketing automation, e-commerce and customer information tracking, digital signage, etc.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., computer science, software engineering, etc.) and 3-4 years of relevant professional work experience; or equivalent combination of skilled credentials to include a minimum 5-6 years of relevant professional work experience.
* Development experience with cloud infrastructure, especially the AWS (Amazon Web Services) platform. Familiarity with cloud-based virtual servers and managed services, including EC2, ECS, RDS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB etc., Experience with serverless development patterns using AWS Lambda a strong plus. Experience migrating legacy processes to cloud platforms.
* Familiarity with modern operating systems and server platforms, including Windows Server, Ubuntu Linux, Apache web servers. Experience with web CMS platforms, including WordPress. Experience with search engine platforms (especially Apache Solr) a plus.
* Experience with SQL and database platforms, with a particular focus on MySQL and SQL Server.
* Experience using version control systems such as Git and Subversion. Ability to implement and enforce best practices for source code control and change management, including use of CI/CD pipelines to automate software development and deployment processes.
* Excellent interpersonal communications skills, including both verbal and written communications. Well organized and highly detail-oriented; able to handle shifting priorities and multiple projects simultaneously, meet tight deadlines, and work independently as well as part of a team.
* Willingness to update skills on a regular basis to keep abreast of rapidly changing technology.

Preferred Qualifications
* Familiarity with key enterprise applications in use at Historic New England is a strong plus. Currently these include Tessitura (CRM), Acumatica (ERP), ResourceSpace (DAM), Minisis Collections Management, Dropbox file storage, Asana (project management), FreshService (service desk management), Wordfly (e-mail marketing), Zoom (telecom and videoconferencing), WordPress CMS, Microsoft Office 365 (e-mail and productivity), Capture One and Adobe Creative Suite (photo and graphics workflow).
* Ability to promote continuous UX improvement for Historic New England web products, including identification of business needs and technical requirements, modeling of user journeys, protoyping and testing, and final design and development.
* Experience developing working with SQL Server stored procedures and views, as well as reporting using SSRS.
* Familiarity with SSO and authentication frameworks; strong understanding of security best practices.
* Experience with integration of marketing automation and CRM solutions; experience with Tessitura CRM preferred. Ability to envision and help implement integrations between backend systems and user-facing websites or internal productivity tools.
* Ability to prototype and refine frontend user interfaces; Solid understanding of web accessibility compliance, responsive/adaptive design, website architecture and aesthetics, and data privacy regulations.
* Ability to maintain and modernize legacy code incorporating multiple languages and legacy APIs, including SOAP interfaces and proprietary scripting languages.
* Understanding of concepts and techniques underlying long-term digital preservation of cultural heritage data.
