Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you excel, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role (External)

Our technicians bridge the gap between team leaders and operatives.

Specializing in various disciplines, this role focuses on Track Maintenance. You will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way), ensuring safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.

Work conditions are outdoors, in all weather, day or night. Tasks may involve manual labor and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, especially working near high-speed trains.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you can lead when asked, use your skills to deliver work safely, and ensure your team has the right competencies. Be a role model for safety and challenge risks to ensure everyone returns home safely.

You matter to us

Technicians can advance to become future team leaders. We value your commitment to self-development and continuous learning, providing training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry is supported through structured training to build confidence and skills.

Your skills matter

While rail experience isn't mandatory, demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct teams safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping skills up-to-date.
* Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge.
* Relevant qualification: NVQ Level 1 or 2, or equivalent experience.

Additional information

* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
* Pre-employment checks: Drug and alcohol testing, medical, BPSS, hearing, and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Must hold a category B driving license.
