Job overview

SUMMARY:

We are looking for a consultant surgeon with an interest in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery.

The appointee will be an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and will share the caseload of colorectal surgery, together with supporting the general and colorectal clinics and MDTs for our patients.

The appointee will be encouraged and supported in developing their own specialty interests in colorectal within the overall job plan depending on the interest of the candidate and the needs of the service.

This is a permanent contract, with a full working week of DCC commitments.

This is a replacement post to join our surgical on-call team of a frequency of 1:8.

Main duties of the job

Key duties will include:

·Supervising and running outpatient clinics, operating lists (independent and in a supporting role for more complex cases)

·Taking part in the weekly Colorectal MDT.

·Endoscopy lists if JAG accredited or working towards accreditation.

·Care for patients on wards in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, including ward nurses and our wider acute team.

·Emergency work: Consultant General Surgery on-call of 1 in 8 schedule.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts. The merger took place on 1 April 2020 and under the umbrella of the single NHS Trust both hospitals retain their identity and individual hospital names. Key services will remain on both sites and be managed as single teams across the whole Bedfordshire catchment area. The Colorectal department is currently evolving with the development of robotic surgery on both sites from 2023.

Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register and have MRCP. Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT.

Residence is required within ten miles by road or thirty minutes travelling time of the Hospital.

The appointment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidate prior to commencement.

Knowledge and Clinical skills

Essential criteria

1. Excellent all round experience of District general hospital

Qualifications

Essential criteria

2. MBBS and FRCS or equivalent
3. JAG accredition in colonoscopy

Desirable criteria

4. Distinctions, Scholarships, Prizes
5. Other Degrees, E.G MSc, MD

Management/Audit

Essential criteria

6. Understand the principles of audit

Desirable criteria

7. Evidence of participation in audit projects, relevant to surgery

GMC Registration

Essential criteria

8. Full GMC Registration and license to practice
9. Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT or CESR (must be on specialist register at time of applying)

Teaching research/Publications

Essential criteria

10. Teaching of medicine to trainees and other medical students

Desirable criteria

11. Some research experience

Personal Skills

12. Ability to communicate effectively and co-operate well with all staff and patients

15. Able to work in Bedford, residing within 10 miles of hospital or 30 minute drive from the hospital.
