Overview
MacTaggart Scott are looking to recruit a Welding and Fabrication Manager to oversee and manage all Welding and Fabrication activities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take care of the day to day running of the function and will be given the autonomy to drive development and improvement within the area. The role holder will play an important part in the success of Welding and Fabrication at MacTaggart Scott as well as the success of the business.

Role
The role will oversee all Welding and Fabrication activities. Key aspects of this will be to ensure that Safety and Quality are maintained throughout the Fabrication and Welding process. The role holder will promote a forward thinking, continuous improvement culture and will be a key figure for management and leadership within the area. Key outputs will include delivery of Welding and Fabrication tasks on time, to budget and to specification, Health and Safety compliance, continuous improvement activities and department adherence to company and customer standards. The role will be a key figure across the business to ensure that all welding and fabrication activities are controlled and maintained. The post holder will also be recognised as the business' Responsible Welding Coordinator (RWC). The role requires minimal supervision and will report into The Production Engineering Manager.
The duties for this role will include
* Direct line management for Welding and Fabrication
* Technical and Operational Leadership for day-to-day activities and long-term planning
* Close collaboration with inspection, sub-contractors and other business functions
* Support to process development and surveillance
* Leading a team of both experienced Fabricators and Welders while managing a successful apprenticeship program for Welding and Fabrication
* Ensuring department adherence and compliance with business policies and procedures
* Ensuring department adherence and compliance with all Health and Safety policies and procedures
* Ensure department adherence and compliance with industry and customer standards (ISO, DEF-STAN, BS EN, NAVSEA etc.)
* Promoting a forward thinking, continuous improvement culture
* Managing and maintaining department measures
Operational Oversight
* Oversee daily welding and fabrication operations across the function
* Ensure collaboration with design and manufacturing engineering to ensure manufacturability
* Ensure collaboration with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure business support is maintained
* Ensure timely resolution of welding-related quality and process issues
Strategic Responsibilities
* Develop and implement the welding and fabrication strategy for internal and external activities
* Identify and introduce new technologies, methods, and equipment
* Monitor and improve production efficiency and cost performance
* Oversee the introduction of lean principles
* Develop, manage and maintain department and functions budgets
Supplier & Subcontractor Management
* Qualify and manage subcontractors and suppliers for fabrication work
* Oversee outsourced projects to ensure they meet internal standards
* Support supplier audits and performance reviews
Quality & Compliance
* Ensure welder qualifications and procedures are maintained (e.g., WPQR, WPS)
* Ensure compliance with all relevant standards (ISO, DEF-STAN, BS EN, NAVSEA etc.)
* Support quality audits, customer inspections, and documentation control
* Provide update sessions and training on changes to standards, operating procedures etc
* Ensure reviews are conducted to determine root cause, corrective and preventative measures with non-conforming equipment
* Work closely with the business health and safety team to ensure compliance with business policies

Requirements
Essential
* Minimum of 10 years' experience in welding and fabrication environment
* Experience in a management/ supervisory role
* Experience reading engineering/technical drawings and documentation
* Clear understanding of welding/ welder codes and standards
* Strong health and safety mindset
* Excellent communications and organisational skills
* Flexible and adaptable to change
* Self-motivated with a good work ethic and attention to detail
* Experience with Microsoft packages
* Experience of ERP systems and Welding Qualification software
* Time-served welder or equivalent with a recognised Apprenticeship
* Holder of NC, HNC or HND in a relevant Engineering Discipline
Desirable
* Experience in a low volume high value manufacturing setting
* Experience of working within a defense standard environment
* Membership of a professional body (TWI, IET, IMechE)
* Experience in Welding Inspection/ QA roles
* CSWIP Inspection Qualifications (3.0, 3.1, 3.2)
* ILM Leadership Qualifications
* TWI Diploma Qualifications
* Engineering Degree
The successful candidate must hold or be able to meet the appropriate Security Clearance as required.
