CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN IN RESPIRATORY MEDICINE with an interest in Lung Cancer

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine with special interest in Lung Cancer at the University of Leicester NHS Trust. This post will support the development of respiratory services. Glenfield Hospital provides specialist services in lung cancer with advanced bronchoscopic and pleural techniques, chronic suppurative lung infections, Cystic Fibrosis, TB, domiciliary ventilation, airways disease, interstitial lung disease, exercise and sports medicine. The Leicester cardio-respiratory emergency streaming pathway has been operational since 2013 and enables assessment by cardio-respiratory teams for patients in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.


Main duties of the job

All patients are assessed in the Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) and Coronary Care Units (CCU) following referral from GPs, 999 ambulances and the Emergency Department. CDU is the largest single cardio-respiratory receiving unit in the UK (50+ patients daily). We operate ambulatory care services for pulmonary embolus and pleural disease, and manage 5 base respiratory wards (129 beds) with sub-specialist themes: short stay unit (ward 20), non-invasive ventilation (ward 15), cystic fibrosis and chronic suppurative lung disease (ward 16), TB and higher dependency (ward 17), pleural disease and cancer (ward 29).

Academically we have close links with the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough. We host the NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, the East Midlands Breathomics Pathology Node (EMBER), and are a core component of the Leicester Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre. The post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Glenfield Respiratory services have a proven track record of innovation and the post holder will lead the on-going development of services. The post is based at Glenfield Hospital with specialist services in lung cancer, bronchoscopic and pleural techniques, and other respiratory conditions. The post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training and collaborate with the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough. The respiratory service collaborates with NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit and EMBER, and is part of the Leicester Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre.

All patients are assessed in CDU and CCU following referrals from GPs, 999 ambulances and the Emergency Department. CDU is the largest cardio-respiratory receiving unit in the UK, with 50+ patients daily. 70% of attendances are direct from primary care. Ambulatory care services for pulmonary embolus and pleural disease are in place.


Person specification


Qualifications

* MB BS or Equivalent
* Full GMC Registration
* Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months
* MRCP or Equivalent
* Membership of relevant Specialist Societies (e.g., BTS, ERS, BTOG)
* Higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD or equivalent)


Experience

* Comprehensive clinical experience in respiratory medicine, pleural diseases and lung cancer
* Excellent clinical skills and ability to meet all aspects of the job plan
* Clear, analytical thinking and sound clinical judgment
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest


Management

* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors
* Ability to organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload
* Understanding of the wider health agenda/NHS
* Ability to lead change, negotiate and influence
* Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles
* Awareness of service development issues
* Evidence of management and administration experience
* Management training on an accredited course


Communication Skills

* Demonstrable written and spoken English to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues
* Empathy, active listening and the ability to build rapport
* High standard of presentation, both written and verbal
* Demonstrable track record of successful change management
* Ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment


Motivation

* Ability to motivate and develop medical and non-medical staff in the pleural/lung cancer service
* Personal integrity and reliability
* Commitment to further develop the post and the service


Audit/Quality Improvement

* Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
* Experience of teaching and organising audit activities
* Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement
* Published audits including quality improvement


Research

* Understanding and interest in research
* Ability to critically appraise research and apply it to clinical practice
* Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research
* Publications in recognised peer-reviewed journals relevant to the specialty


Teaching

* Experience in training/teaching undergraduate and postgraduate learners in pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound
* Enthusiastic, able to inspire and lead others
* Ability to assess clinical competencies
* Appraisal and assessment skills
* Post-graduate qualification in teaching and training or running courses
* Willingness to develop new teaching approaches
