Role Overview
The primary responsibility of the Heavy Cable Recovery Engineer is to recover surplus legacy copper cables from the underground network.
This is a physically demanding role that involves conducting on-site risk assessments, working underground in manholes, operating heavy machinery (including cable winches), and traveling between various locations. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Key Requirements
The key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:
* A clean Basic DBS check (formerly CRB).
* Experience working in the underground telecommunications network.
* Knowledge of cable identification.
* A good level of physical fitness to perform the role’s tasks.
* Accreditation to, or willingness to train on, Openreach SA002, K010, and MT003.
* NRSWA O1 signing, lighting, and guarding certification.
* High motivation with attention to detail.
* The ability to work independently and use your own initiative.
* A strong commitment to health and safety.
* Excellent customer service skills.
* Computer literacy, including the ability to operate a handheld device and use Outlook.
* Promote a positive and professional image of the department by adhering to company policies, procedures, and standards.
* Prioritise tasks, perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage business expectations
* A Category B+E driving licence held for at least 12 months (MJ Quinn can support licence upgrades where required).
Responsibilities
As part of this role, you will:
* Work in a team of three.
* Attend meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
* Work closely with the Project Manager to ensure delivery and compliance with all contract aspects.
* Set up sites in accordance with the Street Works Code of Practice, using barriers around winches and vehicles to create a safe zone for the public.
* Be able to work on roadsides, highways, and public footpaths.
* Recover cables from the underground duct network, cut, identify, document, and dispose of them at approved sites.
* Provide updates and communicate effectively with the back-office team.
* Be paid on a synthetic basis.
* Be employed on an agency worker contract (not PAYE).
Additional Requirements
You must also be:
* Available for night shifts (this is an essential requirement).
* Physically capable of pulling a 10-tonne winch.
* Willing to travel to various job locations within your working area.
* Willing to work away from home if required.
* Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Capable of working underground and in confined spaces.
* Able to work on roadsides, highways, and public footpaths.
* Flexible with working hours.
* Willing to work days, nights, and occasionally weekends (mainly Saturdays if needed).
* Able to work independently once fully competent.
* Be highly motivated with strong attention to detail.
* Customer-focused, polite, and well-presented.
Training
Full training will be provided at MJ Quinn’s state-of-the-art Training Academy. Our lead Openreach Assessors in Liverpool will train you, allowing you to gain full accreditation to begin working on the Openreach network for a national contract. Training will last between 2-3 weeks, depending on individual progress.
MJ Quinn will supply full Openreach training, a van, tooling, kit, PPE, and all necessary equipment.
