Join Our Streetworks Team – Help Keep Kirklees Moving Safely and Smoothly
Are you ready for a role where no two days are the same, and your work makes a visible difference to your local community?
At Kirklees Council, we have a vital responsibility as the local Highway Authority to keep our roads safe, minimise disruption, and ensure roadworks are carried out to the highest standard. Our Streetworks Team plays a key role in coordinating over 16,000 highway works permits each year across our 1,900km road network—from vibrant towns like Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Holmfirth to stunning rural countryside and moorlands.
Due to increasing demand, we're looking for proactive and dedicated Streetworks Inspectors to join our friendly, professional, and supportive team.
What You'll Be Doing
As part of a close-knit team of Inspectors, Coordinators, and Technical Officers, you'll be out and about across the district ensuring that roadworks and street activities are:
* Compliant with the law and our Kirklees Permit Scheme
* Safe for all road users
* Completed to a high standard, with follow-up inspections during the guarantee period
You'll Also
* Monitor activities related to major regeneration projects, public events, and essential utility works
* Respond to urgent reports and incidents, helping to make the highway safe
* Assess and inspect permits for things like skips, scaffolding and other temporary highway uses
What We're Looking For
You'll thrive in this role if you enjoy working independently, staying organised, and using your initiative. You'll need to:
* Be confident in managing multiple site visits daily
* Communicate clearly with colleagues, contractors, and the public
* Remain calm and professional in fast-paced or reactive situations
Ideal Experience & Skills
* Previous experience in Streetworks or highways inspections is preferred but not essential—full training will be provided
* NRSWA accreditation at Supervisor level is ideal, though we'll consider Operative level applicants who are willing to work towards Supervisor status within 6 months to be considered for a permanent position after the initial probationary period. Full training will be provided to assist the applicant achieving the required standard.
* Comfortable using IT systems including Microsoft Office and handheld inspection devices
Why Join Us?
* Career progression: This is an entry-level Engineer position, with a clear pathway to Senior, Principal, and Group Engineer roles
* Flexible working: Hybrid model including mobile working in a Council-provided van, and office time at our modern Civic Centre 1 in Huddersfield
* Work-life balance: Core hours with flexibility to respond to incidents when needed
* Be part of something bigger: Play a key role in high-profile projects like the Transpennine Route Upgrade, town centre regeneration, and more
If you're motivated, community-focused, and eager to make a real impact on the highways of Kirklees, we want to hear from you.
