About the Opportunity
Amentum is recruiting a Principal Mechanical Engineer for our Energy business, supporting UK nuclear fleet transformation and new small modular reactor developers. Our work covers Licensing, New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling within the nuclear sector.
Your role involves managing and delivering mechanical design solutions on projects of varying sizes, working closely with Operations and Engineering Managers to maximize value. The role can be based in Newcastle, Warrington, Glasgow, Gloucester, Stockton, Bristol, or Knutsford, with flexible working options.
Role responsibilities include:
1. Owning technical challenges, developing strategies, and engaging stakeholders.
2. Delivering technical solutions (analysis and design).
3. Producing and reviewing design deliverables (assumption notes, specifications, calculations, methodology plans).
4. Collaborating with international SMR developers for the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s GDA process.
5. Reviewing and justifying design decisions to ONR.
6. Fulfilling CDM responsibilities.
Minimum qualifications and experience:
* MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field.
* Experience in heavy infrastructure, nuclear, or regulated industries.
* Chartered status or working towards it (IMechE, MIET).
* Teamwork and collaboration skills across disciplines.
* Experience with American codes in engineering design/construction.
* Design experience with pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, filters, HVAC, including datasheets.
* Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, SolidWorks).
* Ability to produce technical drawings per BS EN 8888 and P&ID diagrams.
* Knowledge of safety cases in industrial environments.
* Familiarity with Matlab and MathCAD is beneficial.
* Experience writing test plans for Equipment Qualification.
* Understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes (desirable).
