Job Description:
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff in various clinical and non-clinical roles. We deliver hospital, primary, community, and mental health services to over 1.15 million people, expanding to 2.2 million with regional and national services.
The shift pattern for this position is Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
This role offers an innovative opportunity to be among the first clinical pharmacy technicians practicing in mental health services within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. You will join the pharmacy team at GRH/Leverndale, contributing to a new model of integrated pharmacy care on wards, serving patients from the West/South of Glasgow.
The post holder will support patient care through activities such as:
* Patient and staff education
* Medication history reviews
* Monitoring high-risk medicines (e.g., clozapine, lithium, high-dose antipsychotics)
* Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings
The role will develop as the post holder gains experience, working alongside clinical pharmacists to improve ward-level practice and expand pharmacy roles within wards and community mental health teams. This will enable pharmacy technicians and pharmacists to operate at the highest levels of practice.
You will also be involved in educating:
* Nursing staff
* Medical staff
* Carers/support staff
Additionally, you will support the pharmacy technician-led dispensary at Leverndale, including:
* Outpatient activity, including prescription accuracy checking
* Operational management of the busy dispensary
* Managing daily workload and supervising Band 4 pharmacy technicians and support staff
* Preparing and adjusting rotas as needed
* Managing the clozapine service for 1200 outpatients, including dispensing, checking prescriptions, and ensuring blood test results are current
* Coordinating with prescribers, nurses, and healthcare teams for safe clozapine supply
The post holder will balance clinical and operational demands.
The ideal candidate will be a qualified pharmacy technician registered with the GPhC, holding an accredited dispensary accuracy checking qualification. An interest in mental health is desirable; training will be provided.
