Position: Assistant Quantity Surveyor
Location: HM Naval Base - Plymouth - Devonport Royal Dockyard
Role: Full Time, Monday to Friday
We have an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and detail-focused Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our projects and facilities management team, supporting the delivery of a diverse range of works across a secure estate
Job objectives and responsibilities
Pre-Construction
* Prepare and issue tender enquiries for projects and billable works
* Assess tender returns for completeness, accuracy, value for money, and compliance
* Prepare rough order of costs (ROCs) for proposed works and client budget purposes
* Assist in developing activity schedules, scope documents and pricing templates
* Liaise with the supply chain to ensure competitive, compliant, and timely tender responses
Commercial Reporting & Risk Management
* Assist in preparing monthly cost reports and forecasts for review with the Commercial Manager
* Monitor budget variances, escalate issues, and propose corrective actions
* Maintain and update risk registers with commercial input
* Participate in post-project reviews to identify process improvements
Live Project Delivery & Commercial Management
* Contribute to the delivery of projects from contract award through to completion, working alongside project managers and site teams
* Prepare and submit interim applications for payment in accordance with contract terms
* Manage change control processes, ensuring all variations are valued, recorded, and submitted promptly
* Draft, review, and place subcontract orders, ensuring terms and scopes are clear and robust
* Track project costs and budgets and produce cash-flows to ensure financial targets are achieved and value for money is maintained
* Identify and propose cost-saving initiatives to improve project margins
* Maintain accurate commercial records in relevant systems (e.g. Maximo, Coupa, internal trackers)
What we are looking for:
Essential
* Experience in a QS, commercial, procurement or project support role (FM, construction, or MOD desirable)
* Understanding of tendering processes and commercial documentation
* Confident communicator, able to liaise effectively with suppliers, clients, and internal teams
* Good numeracy, attention to detail, and ability to work with budgets and cost data
* Organised, able to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
* Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and familiar with CAFM or commercial management system
Desirable
* Experience working on MOD contracts or secure environments
* Familiarity with NEC or JCT forms of contract
* Willingness to take on small project management responsibilities
* Studying towards or interested in pursuing formal QS qualifications (HNC, degree, or RICS pathway)
