Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Haematology & Blood Transfusion (UHD)

An exciting opportunity for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to operate within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections of the Blood Sciences department at University Hospitals Dorset. The successful candidate will be based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in the Dorset Pathology Hub but will work on rotation in the Poole Essential Services Laboratory. The department offers full training and future development opportunities for the right candidate.
The Haematology & Blood Transfusion department is part of the Blood Sciences division and is fully UKAS and IBMS accredited. The role involves regular rotation through all sections of the department and participation in a 24/7 shift system.
HCPC registration (Biomedical Scientist) is required.
Main duties of the job
The incumbent will perform a range of haematology, coagulation and transfusion tests, support clinical trials, contribute to NHSBT pilots, and maintain the integrated stock management system. The role also includes training junior staff and working closely with the clinical haematology and transfusion teams.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Completed Accredited BSc in Biomedical Science
* Registration with HCPC
* IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent postgraduate knowledge
* MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent area of specialty (optional)
Experience
* Demonstrable experience working in Haematology, Coagulation and Transfusion
* Experience in a UKAS ISO 15189 and MHRA approved laboratory
* Experience working shifts over a 24/7 period
* Good interpretive skills at bench level
* Good attention to detail and accuracy
* Knowledge of common IT software
* Handling biological specimens
* Familiarity with database and spreadsheet software
* Familiarity with Quality Management Software
* Familiarity with Winpath software
Knowledge
* Willing and able to learn new skills
* Currently participating in CPD
* A good understanding of Haematology, Coagulation and Transfusion Science
* Ability to train junior staff to work in accordance to SOPs
