The Office of Voluntary Sub-Warden – Towers Hall (x 2)
A promising opportunity has opened up in Towers Halls of Residence for an individual to commence a 12 month, fixed term Sub-Warden appointment. Applications for this career-building opportunity are invited from doctoral researchers only – ideally with a substantial amount of time remaining on their research programme.
Duties: Towers Sub-Wardens assist the Warden, Daisy Tipping, in the day to day running of the Hall. This may involve pastoral, disciplinary and administrative duties as well as being involved in social aspects of Hall life. The successful applicant will be part of a team which provides out-of-hours emergency cover in a Hall of 310 undergraduate students, fostering a positive student experience.
Personal Attributes: Candidates must display a high level of personal organisational ability, excellent communication skills, good administrative ability, leadership qualities and be a good team player. Sub-Wardens are expected to demonstrate a commitment to the community spirit of the Hall, spending roughly 14 hours of work towards the role on a weekly basis.
Accommodation and Catering Arrangements: Free accommodation is available throughout the year subject to the continual fulfilment of shifts. The accommodation available is only suitable for a single person and simple self–catering facilities are available. Allowance is made for free meals on both weekdays and weekends throughout term time and the successful applicant would be expected to mix with Hall students where possible.
Get to Know the Role and Team: The successful applicant must be available to attend Sub-Warden training sessions as required ( First Aid Training, Annual Sub-Warden Training). This will be held on 15th, 16th and 17th September 2025. It is highly recommended that prospective candidates research to understand the role and the lifestyle changes it requires. You will be welcome to meet the Towers Warden Team in Towers Common Room at 16:15 on Thursday 14th August. Please note, this session will not be recorded.
Application Procedures: Applicants should complete and submit the following documentation to the Warden, Daisy Tipping (), by email by midnight on Friday 22nd August (11:59pm):

4. An accompanying 1-2 page letter outlining suitability for the post.
5. Two written references (PhD Supervisors, Director of Studies / Line Manager, Head of Section).
Interviews will take place during the evening in the week commencing 25th August 2025. The successful candidate should be ready to start their duties in the week commencing 15th September 2025 or earlier.
In addition, the successful applicant will be required to take a day away from their studies on Tuesday 23rd September 2025 to assist the Warden’s Team during First Years Arrivals Day.
