About the Role

Make Music are recruiting a Music Director to lead a creative group music‑making session for young people aged 10 to 16, focusing on improvisation, composition and ensemble skills within popular, contemporary and jazz traditions.


Key Responsibilities

* Lead weekly practical music group sessions (Saturdays 2‑3:30 pm, 30 weeks term time) and prepare the group for performances.
* Help players grow in confidence, develop improvisation, composition and ensemble skills.
* Work with the Make Music Young People team to ensure safeguarding, pastoral care and high standards.
* Bring and create relevant teaching materials and support planning.
* Collaborate with peers to connect the group with the advanced youth band, Jambone and other artistic programmes.
* Contribute to evaluation and monitoring of programme performance, and support consultation with young people.
* Keep up to date with current developments in performance practice, specialist education and learning practice.
* Develop high‑quality inclusive music learning activities, events, rehearsals, recordings and resources.
* Attend and lead performances, events and programme activities as required.
* Attend team and organisational meetings, and understand operational handbooks and guidelines.
* Support effective recruitment of young people in partnership with the Senior Programme Leader.
* Implement safeguarding policies and maintain high standards of health and safety for children and adults at risk.


Requirements & Skills

* Proficiency on your instrument and strong knowledge of popular, contemporary and jazz styles.
* Experience teaching repertoire by ear and creating suitable hand‑outs and resources.
* Ability to teach improvisation and creative music‑making skills in a group setting of varied abilities.
* Experience facilitating collaborative music creation with diverse knowledge bases.
* Working experience with young people aged 10‑16.
* Passion for music, ability to inspire students, adaptability and an inclusive approach.
* Excellent communication skills with young people and colleagues.
* Understanding of inclusive music practice and safeguarding in education contexts.
* Resourceful, initiative‑driven and efficient; professional performance level desirable.


Working Hours & Remuneration

Weekly sessions in term time: Saturdays, 2‑3:30 pm. Salary: SCP 56 / £35.71 per hour (including holiday pay) or freelance for those who meet IR35 requirements.
