We are looking for a reliable and safety-focused HGV Yard Shunter to support our evening and night operations. This is a key role ensuring the smooth movement and positioning of vehicles within the yard, maintaining high standards of safety, communication, and vehicle care. The successful candidate will take pride in doing the job properly and keeping the wheels of the operation turning.
Main responsibilities:
As the role requires complete flexibility with regards to the operation and accountabilities, responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
· Safely manoeuvre rigid and articulated vehicles within the yard and surrounding areas
· Ensure trailers are correctly positioned at bays and parking areas as directed
· Liaise closely with the Transport Office to support operational requirements and workload priorities
· Work alongside the Workshop team, presenting vehicles for maintenance and repairs as required
· Carry out basic vehicle checks and identify defects or damage
· Accurately report defects in line with company and legal procedures
· Always maintain tidy and safe yard conditions
· Adhere to all site rules, health & safety procedures, and company policies
· Occasionally cover trunk runs when required, ensuring compliance with driving hours and legislation
· Represent the company professionally when operating vehicles on site or on the road
Skills & Experience
· Holding of a current HGV licence not essential but previous commercial driving experience would be advantageous
· Previous yard shunting or HGV driving experience is advantageous
· Good understanding of vehicle safety and defect reporting
· Strong communication skills and a team-focused attitude
· Ability to work independently and manage tasks during quieter night hours
· Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious approach to work
