The Opportunity
We seek a motivated Graduate / Post Graduate Soil Scientist to join our expanding Soils team based in Cardiff. The role involves specialist land surveys and advice on agriculture, soils, and peat. Postgraduate research or experience in soils science and familiarity with field survey techniques like Agricultural Land Classification (ALC) is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided. You will work on diverse projects across sectors including energy, infrastructure, mineral extraction, forestry, residential, commercial development, and waste management throughout the UK. The role requires dedication, enthusiasm, strong communication skills, and willingness to travel and work independently at times.
Responsibilities:
As a junior team member, you will:
* Conduct soil surveys on site.
* Coordinate soil tests with laboratories.
* Process samples and manage laboratory results.
* Support technical reporting with data management.
* Prepare interpretative reports, including ALC, soil resource surveys, and soil management plans.
* Assist senior staff with planning and site work.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and liaise with clients and stakeholders.
* Develop skills towards professional registration (e.g., The Institution of Environmental Sciences or British Society of Soil Science).
The ideal candidate will hold a BSc or equivalent in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Horticultural Science, Geography, or related fields, with postgraduate experience or qualifications in Soil Science preferred.
Skills required
* Understanding of environmental issues and soils' role in the environment.
* Experience with field survey techniques.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe.
* Willingness to travel across the UK.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance, and practices.
* Experience in the industry and knowledge of ALC, EIA, and related operations.
* Interest in soil carbon and climate change mitigation.
* Knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS is advantageous.
