Sterile Services Assistant

The Sterile Services Department at James Cook Hospital have an exciting opportunity for motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our team.
This post will be paid at an Agenda for Change (AfC) Band 2 level for the first 12 months/until the successful candidates are fully trained. Then once the candidates are signed off as competent they will progress to becoming a Sterile Services Technician on an AfC Band 3. The current training provided includes a minimum of:-
Around 6 months shopfloor based training - during which time you will work with a 'buddy' and learn all of the surgical instrumentation names and how to work all machinery within Sterile Services etc.
A period of performance review whilst embedding the training provided.
Completion of a City & Guilds qualification in The Principles of Decontamination
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post are to receipt, check, prepare and wash surgical instruments and sets. The clean sets are then checked for cleanliness, wrapped, packed and autoclave in accordance with various national processing standards.
All stages of the Sterile Services processes have to be tracked and identified to the person completing the above tasks. This post therefore also involves learning to use our computerised instrument traceability/tracking system.
Whilst the base for this role is at James Cook Hospital the successful candidate may be expected to also work on the Friarage Hospital site. Staff may also be required to work within our Endoscope Decontamination Department on occasion (training will be given).
Some experience in either Sterile Services, Stores or Endoscope Decontamination would be an advantage but it is not essential as full training will be provided in role.
The successful candidates will be keen to learn and to progress in their role and they must do this in order to become a fully competent Sterile Services Technician
It is essential that candidates have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and are capable of working in a service driven by deadlines and turnaround times.

Knowledge
* The ability to learn and robustly follow procedures and instructions
* An excellent understanding and practice of hygiene.

Qualifications
* Level 1 in Maths/English or equivalent demonstrable experience
Experience
* Experience in a Sterile Services Department or similar environment would be beneficial
