Job Description
We are looking for an experienced environmental professional to join our team that regulates waste and industrial installations in the Solent and South Downs Area. As a Regulatory Officer you will be at the forefront of protecting people and the environment from harm and helping contribute to a cleaner, greener world.
Responsibilities
* Undertake compliance assessment activities at a wide range of complex waste and industrial sites, focusing on sectors such as landfill, biowaste, incineration, chemicals or hazardous waste.
* Ensure permit compliance and make complex assessments of operators’ ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise use of resources.
* Work nationally within the organisation to share best practice affecting your area of specialism and converse knowledge across the organisation.
* Set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law if they fail to comply.
* Respond to and investigate incidents, ensuring preventive and protective action is implemented.
* Use influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, dealing with senior industry, local community and other groups.
Salary and grading will be based on experience and skills. The posts can be based in any office across the area including Romsey, Chichester, Worthing or Pevensey. Attendance will be flexible, combined with site visits and home working.
Team and Working Environment
We regulate a wide range of waste and industrial sectors including landfill, chemicals, hazardous waste, incineration, combustion, oil refineries, biowaste treatment and food and drink. We also work with the Health and Safety Executive as the joint Competent Authority for sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations. Experience and Skills
Essential
* Proactive, self‑motivated, confident communicator used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes, with strong interpersonal skills and well‑developed technical or regulatory experience within an industrial or waste environment.
Preferably
* Familiar with environmental management systems, auditing and root cause analysis.
* Ability to interpret environmental monitoring and performance data.
* Experience managing multiple demands and delivering outcomes independently.
* Initiative and continuous improvement approach.
* Degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline and, preferably, membership of a relevant professional organisation.
License Requirements
Valid UK driver’s licence.
