About Aberavon Hospital
Aberavon Hospital is our specialist mental health service in Wales. The hospital supports adults with complex mental health needs and provides structured therapeutic interventions, recovery focused support, and a safe and stable environment. The service works under Welsh legislation and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) standards. You will lead a skilled multi disciplinary team and maintain strong working relationships with Local Health Boards, commissioners, and external partners.
About the Role
As the Registered Manager, you will hold full operational, clinical, and regulatory responsibility for the hospital. You will ensure the service meets all HIW standards and Welsh legislative requirements, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010.
You will be accountable for delivering safe, person centred care, maintaining high compliance standards, and leading the staff team. Your role will include safeguarding oversight, incident and complaint management, governance meetings, and ensuring the service remains inspection ready at all times.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Ensuring full compliance with HIW and Welsh Government standards.
2. Leading safeguarding processes in line with the Wales Safeguarding Procedures.
3. Overseeing all incidents, complaints, investigations, and learning.
4. Managing staffing, recruitment, induction, training, rota creation, and Super 6 supervisions.
5. Ensuring safe staffing levels and reducing agency usage.
6. Overseeing referrals, assessments, admissions, and occupancy levels.
7. Completing pre admission assessments and confirming funding arrangements.
8. Leading the internal quality assurance programme with the Quality Compliance Team.
9. Maintaining accurate and compliant clinical documentation and care plans.
10. Overseeing budgets, financial monitoring, and seeking approval for non standard expenditure.
11. Contributing to service development, strategic planning, and external relationships.
12. Providing visible leadership and promoting a positive, respectful culture.
13. Supporting nurses with revalidation and ensuring ongoing staff development.
14. Ensuring strong infection prevention and control practice.
15. Maintaining a safe environment and ensuring all health and safety responsibilities are met.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will need:
16. A Registered Mental Health Nurse qualification with active NMC registration.
17. Strong leadership experience in an inpatient or intensive mental health setting.
18. Knowledge of Welsh mental health legislation and HIW requirements.
19. Experience in safeguarding, governance, and multi agency working.
20. Confidence managing rotas, staffing levels, and workforce planning.
21. Strong communication skills and the ability to lead by example.
22. A values driven approach that supports a positive culture and high standards of care.
23. Commitment to continuous improvement and staff development.
24. A calm, professional approach with the ability to manage risk and make decisions in pressured situations.
