Job overview

We are looking for proactive, motivated, forward‑thinking and dynamic individuals to join our clinical team. This substantive appointment is based at Lister Hospital, Stevenage, and involves working closely with the existing Pathology Consultants to provide a high standard of care across the Trust. The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) and there is no on‑call commitment.


Main duties of the job

* Participate in surgical cut‑up, surgical reporting, cytology reporting, frozen section reporting, ensuring the delivery of a high quality histopathology and cytopathology service.
* Advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters generally and for individual patient cases with clinical colleagues in the hospital, general practitioners and Trust staff.
* Participate in the training of clinical fellows.
* Take responsibility for interpretation of results and advise on appropriate further investigations where necessary.
* Participate in the management of the service, working with laboratory staff and the pathology management team to set clinical priorities and resolve operational problems.
* Lead laboratory staff on clinical matters, instructing and working with them in the day‑to‑day handling of cases.
* Participate in audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.
* Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists.
* Comply with the Trust mandatory training programme.
* Work with colleagues on setting the strategic clinical direction and development of the pathology service and participate in administrative duties as required.
* Advise and discuss with the pathology management team changes in methodologies or introduction of new equipment, consumables or new tests.


Person specification

Qualifications / Training:

* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
* UK‑trained applicants must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* Non‑UK‑trained applicants must show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* FRCPATH or an equivalent qualification.
* College Fellowship.

Previous Experience:

* Demonstrable experience in a locum consultant role.
* Experience supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues.
* Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion.
* Evidence of leading on patient safety issues and achieving change in practice.
* Published papers and original work in peer‑reviewed journals.
* Demonstrated understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Demonstrable experience and participation in research.

Skills:

* Evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and learning from errors.
* Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
* Ability to demonstrate situational awareness and application of good decision‑making.
* Ability to effectively teach clinical skills.
* Ability to critically appraise published evidence.

Knowledge:

* Understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Comprehensive knowledge and insight regarding all domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice.

Other Requirements:

* Demonstrates an interest and commitment to the specialty.
