Overview

Job summary: This position involves delivering a specialised uniformed service. The individual will ensure that patients, visitors, and staff receive appropriate guidance while maintaining a safe and secure environment in accordance with legal requirements, particularly during emergency situations. This role includes liaising with emergency services and providing a high visible deterrent to crime and aggression. The post holder may be required to work across NUH locations and may perform car parking management duties, including addressing minor equipment faults.

The Trust has established policies and guidelines for the prevention and management of violent and abusive conduct, and this role will support the implementation of these strategies. All duties are to be performed with a view to ensuring safety and security of people and property and to promoting a safe environment and reducing the fear of crime through a high profile visible presence.


Responsibilities

* Carry out patrols and provide escorts as requested.
* Undertake cash lifts in accordance with departmental procedures.
* Respond to security incidents within an agreed time frame; where appropriate, use reasonable force in line with Trust policy, law and legislation; seek clinical advice when responding to incidents where available.
* Work as part of Fire Response and Major Incident teams; liaise with other departments and the Fire Brigade as required and in line with Trust policies.
* Monitor alarms and ensure equipment is operational; report faults promptly.
* Use designated powers and policies to intervene at incidents, deter and prevent crime and anti-social behaviour; restraining/detaining individuals as appropriate and in accordance with policy and training (including considerations related to mental health/capacity, minors, elderly, medical or chemical treatment, or intoxication).
* Provide presence within the Emergency Department and across the hospitals, including bed watches where required.
* Promote a pro-security culture within the Trust; detect and report security incidents/breaches; gather information/intelligence on criminal offences and identify suspects and trends.
* Participate in the Trust Development Programme for Security Staff.
* Use the patrolling system (Diester) during patrols; include car parks as necessary and report discoveries.
* Support car parking and traffic management duties when required, including minor fault repairs to car parking machines, managing traffic flow, and reporting inappropriate parking.
* Investigate security incidents/breaches in a fair, objective and professional manner; consider preventive action and sanctions as appropriate.
* Attend court and give evidence where required.
* Ensure Health & Safety requirements are met and uphold Equal Opportunities and Diversity policies.
* Comply with Trust and local security policies; operate department communications equipment and assist with telephone inquiries as needed.
* Drive Trust vehicles as required; liaise with police, fire brigade and other emergency services; assist in search of buildings and prevention of danger.
* Carry out traffic management and car parking duties outside contracted hours as necessary; support NUH staff with minor ID card/access control issues and advise according to Trust policies.
* Wear Trust-approved uniform and maintain the cleanliness of the work base; display ID badge at all times.


Qualifications and Experience

Essential

* NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Maths and English
* In-date SIA Front Line Guarding License
* Experience of working with the public in a security-related role for at least 5 years
* Experience of working alone and with minimal supervision while undertaking security duties

Desirable

* In-date Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) License
* First aid responder training or similar; NVQ Level 2 or above in a security-related subject
* NVQ Level 1 or above in ICT; full UK Driving Licence; NHS conflict resolution training; NHS control and restraint training
* Experience in healthcare environments; experience in uniformed roles (e.g., military, police)

Communication & Relationship Skills

* High level of verbal communication and customer service; ability to work as part of a small team; reliable and industrious; caring, polite and friendly demeanour
* Desirable: high quality written communication; proven ability to deal with vulnerable people in potentially distressing situations
