Production & Maintenance Supervisor

About the Role
Our Client in Luton is looking for an experienced Production & Maintenance Supervisor to join their team in Luton. This is a newly created, combined role for someone who can confidently manage people and workflow while also bringing a solid mechanical or engineering background to the table.
You will be responsible for supervising production staff, managing day-to-day workflow, and using your technical knowledge to understand job timings, identify machine issues, and keep the operation running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
People Management
1. Supervise, coach, and support production operators on a day-to-day basis
2. Conduct one-to-ones, performance reviews, and return-to-work meetings
3. Manage attendance, sickness, and lateness in line with company procedures
4. Deliver training on safety, quality, and operational procedures
5. Foster a positive team environment and lead by example
Production & Workflow
6. Coordinate and monitor production activities to meet daily, weekly, and monthly output targets
7. Allocate labour, materials, and equipment to ensure smooth workflow
8. Use your mechanical knowledge to understand how long each job should take and hold operators accountable to those timeframes
9. Resolve operational issues quickly to minimise downtime
10. Track production metrics including output, scrap, downtime, and labour efficiency
11. Prepare shift reports and communicate issues to management
12. Cover production planning duties during holiday periods or absences
Mechanical & Maintenance
13. Be the first point of contact when a machine issue arises – able to identify the fault and assess whether it can be resolved on-site or requires an engineer
14. Liaise with maintenance teams and external contractors to address breakdowns and prevent recurring issues
15. Ensure machinery is operated correctly and maintained in line with planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules
16. Maintain accurate plant and machinery records
17. Support the installation and commissioning of new equipment where required
Quality & Safety
18. Enforce safe working practices and ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards
19. Ensure products meet quality specifications and implement corrective actions where needed
20. Full compliance with our Clients Health & Safety and quality procedures (ISO9001, ISO14001)
What We’re Looking For
Essential
21. Proven experience in a supervisory or team leader role within a production or manufacturing environment
22. Mechanical or engineering background – whether through formal qualifications, an apprenticeship, or hands-on experience
23. Ability to understand how long jobs should take and manage operators accordingly
24. Confidence managing people through one-to-ones, reviews, and absence management
25. Strong communication skills – able to communicate clearly at all levels
26. Proactive problem-solving approach with the ability to stay calm under pressure
Desirable
27. HNC or equivalent in a Mechanical Engineering discipline
28. Experience with planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
29. Familiarity with production planning or scheduling
30. Knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) or ability to read mechanical/hydraulic schematics
Hours & Package
31. Salary: Up to £45,000 per annum (depending on experience)
32. Hours: Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 17:00
