The role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and roles. The Role

We are seeking an experienced Painter to join the Estates team at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This key role supports essential building services and patient care through planned and reactive maintenance work in a busy acute hospital environment.

  • Location: Glasgow Royal Infirmary
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working pattern: Full‑time, 36 hours per week (Monday–Thursday 08:00–16:00, Friday 08:00–14:30)

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out painting and decorating maintenance within healthcare facilities in compliance with HAI SCRIBE policies, industry codes, standards and health and safety requirements.
  • Plan and undertake both planned and ad‑hoc maintenance, completing job dockets and timesheets.
  • Perform interior painting work, including cleaning, surface preparation, tape application, joint filling, striping, painting, staining, varnish application and floor paint.
  • Hang wall coverings, preparing or removing surfaces as required.
  • Participate fully in Permit‑to‑Work systems.
  • Affix signs and labels, carry out basic sign writing and stencilling.
  • Consult users on colour choice, take room dimensions, prepare material lists, request spare parts and materials, and report further work required.
  • Clean metal kitchen canopies and light shades.

Qualifications, Training and Experience

  • Completed a recognised apprenticeship or structured training in painting/decoration, or hold an SVQ Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship, Higher/Advanced Higher, Higher National Certificate or equivalent (SCQF 6‑7).
  • Experience performing painting and decoration work in a hospital or similar environment is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of safety and health procedures in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary Estates team.
  • Willingness to undertake additional training and development offered by NHS Scotland.
