A Factory Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a manufacturing facility to ensure production runs smoothly, efficiently, safely, and profitably. Their role usually combines operations management, people management, and strategic planning.
Main role and HR responsibilities
* Oversee staff and who is present.
* Have monthly 1-2-1s with staff
* Plan for when people are off. Manage holiday calendars
* Be proactive not reactive.
* Main people to manage are supervisors and senior staff.
* Assign and manage Supervisors, Operators and technicians
* Motivate the team every day.
* Conduct regular meetings/ briefings to align the team on priorities, safety, and quality.
* Deal with conflicts
Quality control – the over arching responsibility
* Implement checklists for each QC stage.
* Introduce a "stop and ask" policy: if in doubt, raise it before proceeding.
* Spot check jobs
* Ensure sign-off at each QC checkpoint.
* Handle any errors, non-conformities, or reworks.
* Track Mistakes Using a "kaizen":
* Review kaizen data weekly
Communication
* Communicate with fitters
* Communicate with confirmations team.
* Communicate remakes with management where necessary
* Communicate with purchasing managers
Training and onboarding
* Needs to be able to train masons and machine operators
* Needs to be involved in induction and onboarding every factory member of staff.
Tooling
* Ensure everyone has necessary tools and machines are being appropriately serviced and maintained
Health and Safety
* Ensure everyone is following health and safety procedures and wearing PPE.
* Ensure masks are being worn
Production & Operations Management
* Plan, organize, and supervise production schedules.
* Ensure production targets (output, quality, cost, deadlines) are met.
* Allocate resources (machinery, manpower, materials) effectively.
* Monitor workflows and remove bottlenecks in production.
Cost & Efficiency Management
* Control budgets and minimize waste.
* Track production costs, maintenance expenses, and labour efficiency.
* Look for ways to improve productivity and reduce downtime.
Reporting & Strategy
* Report KPIs (output, scrap rate, downtime, labor costs) to senior management.
* Contribute to long-term operational strategy and planning.
* Implement lean manufacturing, automation, or process improvements.
