Night Fitter – Rail Maintenance Trains Location: Basingstoke Salary: £43,000 per annum Overtime Excellent Benefits Hours: 10-hour Night Shifts (full-time, permanent) 40-hour week Shift Pattern: Nights only (moving to mixed days/nights from April 2026) The Opportunity We are seeking a Night Fitter to join a long-established rail engineering and maintenance team based in Basingstoke. The role supports the operation and maintenance of Mobile Maintenance Trains that carry out essential works across the UK rail network. This position offers the stability of a fixed night shift with the chance to progress into a more hands-on engineering role next year as the working pattern moves to a mix of days and nights. About the Role Working 10-hour night shifts, you will primarily be on standby, supporting train operations through the night. Respond to any mechanical or minor maintenance issues that arise while the trains are in service. Ensure all equipment is safe, functional, and ready for use. During the day shift transition in 2026, you will receive additional technical training to take on more hands-on engineering and maintenance duties based at the depot. You’ll work within a small, close-knit engineering team committed to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities Provide mechanical and technical support to maintain the operational readiness of mobile rail maintenance trains. Carry out minor fault-finding, maintenance, and repairs as required. Follow all safety, quality, and environmental standards. Accurately complete maintenance records and defect reports. Assist with scheduled servicing, depot-based work, and training as the role develops. Participate in competence assessments and maintain certification. What We’re Looking For Recognised qualification in Mechanical / Electrical / Maintenance Engineering or equivalent practical experience (minimum 2 years in an associated trade). Understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems. Full UK driving licence. Willingness to work night shifts (and mixed shifts from April 2026). Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently. Good communication and teamwork skills. Training & Development Comprehensive training provided on rail maintenance systems, safety procedures, and depot operations. Ongoing upskilling opportunities and support to gain additional qualifications. Progression potential into senior fitter or maintenance technician roles as the position expands.
