Job Description:
Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe.
Oxford Nanopore employs from multiple subject areas including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.
Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis (for rapid insights), in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale, that can analyse native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths.
We are looking for someone with molecular biology lab-based skills to join the Protein Sequencing team as a Research Scientist. This position supports the discovery and testing of novel peptide and protein sequencing methods.
We aim to inspire anyone to sequence anything, anywhere. Do you want to be part of that?
Responsibilities
The Protein Sequencing team explores novel ways to sequence and characterise proteins using nanopores, with the potential to revolutionise biological analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and evaluating novel ways of delivering proteins to our platform comprised of highly-arrayed nanopores. The role will be mostly laboratory-based with responsibilities including:
1. Preparation of analytes for sequencing using existing and novel methods;
2. Biochemical, biophysical, and sequencing-based assays;
3. Protein and nucleic acid modification or conjugation;
4. Analysing, presenting and summarising data to other members of the team;
5. Lab book-keeping and use of our LIMS systems to track experiments;
6. Collaborating with other teams across our Research, Development and Production divisions.
What We're Looking For...
PhD in biochemistry, chemistry or other physical/biological subject, or proven experience in a relevant field in industry.
7. Experience in handling both proteins & DNA in a molecular biology-type setting.
8. Good knowledge of biophysical and bio-characterisation techniques, such as gel based, and plate reader functional assays.
9. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
10. Strong attention to detail and a high level of organisation.
11. A strong desire to learn and grow within the role.
12. Sound knowledge of molecular biology, structural biology and single-molecule biophysical methods, and familiarity with Oxford Nanopore’s commercially-available platforms and kits are all highly desirable.
13. Familiarity with a programming language (Python, R) and the UNIX command-line is also helpful.
Training will be given and, as such, a willingness to learn and develop is crucial. Applications are encouraged from highly motivated individuals who enjoy tackling new challenges, are quickly adaptable in an exciting and fast-paced environment, and who perform well under pressure.
We offer outstanding benefits, including an attractive bonus, generous pension contributions, private healthcare and an excellent starting salary. Based within beautiful, landscaped surroundings with tree-lined walks, water features and a lake, all of which make for a wonderful working environment.
