Acute Oncology Sister/Charge Nurse B6 – NHS

Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre, Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for a committed, dynamic, and motivated individual with a passion for Acute Oncology to join our dedicated and cohesive team.

About the Role:

* Coordinating the Oncology Same Day Emergency Care (OSDEC) Unit, triaging referrals, admitting patients, and organising investigations.
* Assessing patients and providing specialist oncology nursing care, including managing treatment complications, administering medication and fluids, and performing nursing procedures.
* Triaging oncology and hematology patients through the Oncology Treatment Hotline, ensuring timely advice and intervention.
* Working closely with the Emergency Department, Chemotherapy Day Unit, Radiotherapy, St. Luke's Outpatient Clinic, and inpatient wards to ensure smooth patient flow and high‑quality care.
* Leading service improvements, participating in audits, research, and education, and ensuring adherence to national guidelines and Cancer Alliance protocols.

Main duties of the job

To work alongside the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) to coordinate and deliver a comprehensive Acute Oncology Service (AOS) within the Trust, ensuring the provision of high‑quality, timely care to oncology patients while maintaining clear communication with multidisciplinary teams.

Job responsibilities

Through training, study, and hands‑on experience, the post holder will develop expertise in providing a highly specialised Acute Oncology nursing service at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. Working closely with the AOT, the post holder will contribute to the implementation and delivery of the AOS, aligning with the National Chemotherapy Advisory Group (NCAG) report and Acute Oncology Service Measures. This role plays a critical part in monitoring service impact using key performance metrics and supporting the strategic development of the service.

About You:

* Strong clinical assessment skills and ability to work independently and proactively.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong interest in developing and improving Acute Oncology Services.
* Collaborative working within a multidisciplinary team to provide timely, patient‑centred care.

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications

* 1st level registered Nurse with current registration.
* 1st degree (health related).
* Relevant post‑registered qualifications in cancer, Acute or emergency care.
* Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998 or equivalent.
* Evidence of recent professional development.

Person Specification – Desirable Qualifications

* Management qualification.
* Clinical Examination Module at Level 3/4 or willingness to work towards.
* Advanced communication training.
* Psychological support training at level 2.

Knowledge – Essential

* Post‑registration experience within an acute cancer, emergency care or palliative care setting.
* Demonstrated advanced clinical skills in managing complex care situations.
* Experience in multi‑disciplinary education within the specialist field.
* Practical experience of change/development practice and project management.
* Experience of undertaking and applying research or audit to deliver the clinical governance agenda.
* Recent experience within primary and secondary care environments.
