Applications are open for this innovative post within Critical Care in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. This post is for 12 months commencing 5th August 2026. If appointed, you will have the opportunity to work in a welcoming and forward-thinking department.

The intention of this position is to increase exposure to critically unwell patients before applications to the national Intensive Care, Anaesthetics and associated Higher Speciality Training recruitment processes. Opportunities will be provided to enhance portfolios of successful candidates thereby increasing competitiveness in future recruitment applications.


Critical Care Senior CDFs

This is a post working within the Critical Care Department at University Hospital Crosshouse. Applicants will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of critical care medicine and gain experience in procedural skills e.g. advanced airway management, placement of central lines, inter‑hospital transfer etc.

Doctors within this role will be expected to participate in ward rounds, MDT meetings and reviewing patients referred to Critical Care in both the Emergency Department and wards. If appointed, you will provide out of hours commitments to the Critical Care rota on the UHC site as well as scheduled daytime sessions in UHC and UHA Critical Care.

Having advanced airway competencies and a minimum of two years of Anaesthetic or Critical Care experience is essential for this role.

The post holders will be encouraged and fully supported to participate in service development projects, with an expectation that this will lead to a poster or oral presentation at a national conference relevant to the area of improvement work. * Organ Donation and End of Life Care
* Transfer Medicine
* Research including Associate PI scheme
* Regional Anaesthesia
* Acute Pain Management
* Vascular Access
* Perioperative Medicine

Clinical development, supervised by a named trainer, will be combined with directed activity linked to an area of mutual professional interest including clinical teaching, quality improvement and safety, medical informatics or management and leadership development.
