The John Roan School07/05/2024
At The John Roan School we are relentless in our pursuit of excellence. We aim to ignite ambition in every student through teaching that empowers and inspires; a calm and disruption-free learning environment; and a strong character education programme. We have one overriding, audacious ambition that drives us – to be the very best school in the Greenwich area, giving confidence to parents and carers that their child will not only achieve their best academically, but also thrive in their time with us. Our school PRIDE ethos represents our expectations of everyone in our school and is at the core of everything that we do.Founded in 1677, The John Roan School is one of the oldest state schools in the country. The school is a mixed ability co-educational 11 – 18 school set across two sites a short walk apart in the heart of Greenwich. We became part of United Learning in 2019, and we are already seeing the results of our continuing journey of rapid improvement. We are a proudly inclusive school with a Centre for Autism, a thriving SEND provision and growing numbers of students with English as an Additional Language. The John Roan School values personal development, and on joining the school you will have a wealth of opportunities to develop through our internal CPD programmes and within the United Learning group of schools. Our staff team is diverse and reflects the multi-cultural student population of the school at all levels. We are part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England. United Learning schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. The subject specialists, Group-wide intranet, own curriculum, and online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance. As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’. We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options. United Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All positions are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and shortlisted candidates will be subject to an online check. Here at United Learning, we are committed to ensuring our employees feel valued and appreciated. Because we are a group, we can reward you better than any school could alone, and this includes your employee benefits. Here is some information about the benefits available to United Learning and

John Roan School- United Learning:
The John Roan School has recently been rated as Good by Ofsted for its Quality of Education so now, as part of the school's journey from 'good to great', we are looking for someone who knows what great teaching and learning looks like and who cares passionately about all students being entitled to a great provision. We want you to inspire our students and our staff, to share your ambition for them and to guide them to continuously improve their practice and perform to their very best.
The school's approach to teaching and learning is guided by an understanding of the Science of Learning and specifically Rosenshine's principles, which teaching staff are trained on throughout the year. Weekly Deliberate Practice sessions as well as termly Twilight training are used as part of a thorough CPD entitlement for all staff as part of a genuine commitment to developing people at all levels to bring out the best in everyone.
The school is fortunate to be part of United Learning, benefiting from its centralised curriculum (which Head of Department adapt for our context) and Subject and Specialist Advisor Team, ensuring a level of support in both curriculum design and delivery for our students.
