An exciting opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer to join an established and busy in-house design team specialising in civil engineering projects in the rail sector.

Having secured a number of long term Frameworks with key clients, AmcoGiffen are further expanding our in-house Civil & Structural Design team. We have a number of positions available at various levels for engineers who are committed to delivering the optimum design solution, building on their experience, and furthering their professional development.
The in-house design team consists of specialist designers at various levels of competency responsible for design engineering on a variety of civils, rail and engineering projects and frameworks including CP6, asset management contracts, infrastructure projects and tendered rail / civils schemes.
Projects can typically include bridge re-construction/replacement, upgrades and refurbishments, station work (platforms etc.), access for all schemes, structures including bridges, tunnels and footbridges.
The Role
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer has responsibility for providing geotechnical support to the Design & Engineering team and the wider AmcoGiffen business, including geotechnical design, preparation, checking and approval of supporting calculations, reports and specifications related to shallow and deep foundation design, earthworks, slope engineering, embedded and gravity retaining wall design, underground excavations, soil or rock anchors, ground treatment and ground investigation. Programme & budgetary control, SHEQ considerations, and the coaching and mentoring of colleagues is also a key aspect of this role.
Your day to day role will include but not be limited to:
* An advanced understanding of engineering principles, with appreciation of the factors influencing design solutions, including;
o engagement with planners, estimators and construction staff
o sustainable, efficient and economic methods of construction; and
o use of materials within the requirements.
* Problem solving and decision making in line with level of responsibility.
* Experience of working on multi-disciplinary projects including interactions with E&P, Signalling
* Knowledgeable about the geological and natural environment, and around principal soil and
encountered in the UK.
* Knowledgeable about water, ground and soil gas monitoring techniques.
* Undertake and/or review desk studies by utilising various sources of information, including
geological maps, historical maps and aerial photographs.
* Prepare and/or approve detailed Site Investigation specifications, in accordance with the
Ground Investigation.
* Plan and supervise site investigations and input to budgets related to ground investigation
* Prepare and/or review and approve interpretative documents (Ground Investigation Reports
documents (Geotechnical Design Reports - GDR’s), assessing the risk of geological hazards
factors affecting engineering works are identified and mitigation proposed.
* Advise on the suitability of construction materials as applicable.
* Lead with the geotechnical aspects of design, with proficiency in Geotechnical engineering
or LimitState:GEO.
* Working knowledge and understanding of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and Regulatory including but not limited to BS 5930, BS 6031, BS 8002, BS 8004, BS1377 and Eurocode
* Understanding of ISO 9001 / 14001 / 44001, PAS 1192 and OHSAS 18001 standards.
Requirements
To excel in this role, you will have previous experience as a Geotechnical Senior Design Engineer in a rail project environment.
* Academic Qualifications: Degree Level in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology.
* Professional Qualifications: IEng/CEng accreditation with a relevant Professional Body e.g., ICE, IMMM or the Geological Society, and preferably ‘RoGEP’ accreditation.
* Level / Type of Experience: Ground Analysis and Engineering, with experience as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Geologist, or a similar position.
* Experience in rail with appreciation of earthworks, substructures i.e. foundations,
drainage and highways interfaces with a number of clients.
