About the Role
Aberdeen Performing Arts runs a year-round programme of drama workshops for children and young people aged 4-18 years.
We are seeking an experienced freelance youth theatre facilitator to join our team and deliver our participatory drama programme for young people in our Junior Youth Theatre group (S1-S2) This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about using theatre to help young people build confidence, creativity and teamworking skills.
The youth theatre facilitator will be responsible for the planning and delivery of one workshop per week and for facilitating and supporting workshops by visiting professional artists.
In addition, the youth theatre facilitator will work with participants to create and direct an end of year performance as part of Light the Blue Multi-Arts Festival.
The youth theatre programme is managed by our Producer for Participation, who is overseen by the Head of Creative Engagement.
Junior Youth Theatre Workshops take place in our venues and run on Thursday evenings 6.30pm – 8.30pm over three terms from August to November, January to March/April and April to June.
Key Responsibilities
-Plan and deliver high-quality weekly, engaging and accessible workshops for our Junior Youth Theatre group.
-Work in collaboration with professional guest artists, prepare for and direct a production as part of Light the Blue festival in June.
-Encourage and motivate participants to reach their potential in a safe and enjoyable environment.
-Liaise with the Producer for Participation in planning and development of youth theatre sessions.
-Ensure Aberdeen Performing Arts’ child protection policy is adhered to.
-Ensure the wellbeing, health and safety of all workshop participants.
- Evaluate workshops on an ongoing basis with more comprehensive evaluation at year end.
General
-Attend planning meetings as necessary.
-Take part in CPD and appropriate training.
-Support the development of the Creative Assistant and aid them in ensuring workshop administrative tasks are completed.
-Regularly update the Producer for Participation on the work and progress of the group and of any issues or enquiries from parents.
-Be a positive advocate for Aberdeen Performing Arts.
Person Specification
You will have:
-Relevant experience in delivering creative, accessible and contemporary youth theatre workshops for diverse groups of young people with a focus on co-creating with participants.
-A willingness to support young people’s wellbeing, build rapport and respond to their needs.
-A willingness to collaborate with other creative professionals.
-A dynamic approach to working with young people.
-A commitment to and a champion of equality and inclusion.
-Excellent team working skills.
-Excellent organisational and planning skills.
-Satisfactory PVG check.
Skills and Experience
We are looking for a Youth Theatre facilitator with a proven record in delivering and directing quality youth theatre workshops and productions. You will have a passion for the arts and an understanding of how participation can be an enriching and life changing experience for young people.You will be committed to and have a strong understanding of the importance of ensuring the arts are accessible to all. A keenness to continuously update your learning and professional development when opportunities arise is key to the role, as is a confident and enthusiastic outlook and willingness to be part of a hard-working team. We are looking for a person who values the opportunity to enthuse young people to participate in the arts and who understands the importance of allowing young people to develop their ideas and take the lead in designing the content and output of the workshops wherever possible.
Additional Information
The main point of contact is the Producer for Participation, who reports to the Head of Creative Engagement.
The Youth Theatre Facilitator fee is £98.30 per week, to be paid on submission of an invoice at the end of week 5 and week 10. The fee is inclusive of planning, delivery and travel.
Additional hours worked during Light The Blue festival will be agreed with the Producer for Participation and the Producer for Light The Blue, in advance of the work being carried out.
There are 3 terms in each year with Junior Youth Theatre Workshops taking place on a Thursday evening from 18.30-20.30 as follows:
Term 1
Monday 25th August - Saturday 15th November
October Break - Monday 13 th October to Monday 27 October
Term 2
Monday 12th January - Saturday 24th March
February Break - Saturday 7 th February to Friday 13 th February
Term 3
Monday 13th April - Saturday 20th June
Including Light the Blue Festival– Tuesday 2 nd June to Sunday 14 th June approx. (TBC)
