Job Title: Workshop Controller
Location: Staines-upon-Thames
Salary: £52,500 - £55,750 Basic
Hours: Monday to Friday Days
About the role
We're looking for a skilled and motivated Workshop Controller. This is a key position within a busy municipal workshop, combining hands‑on technical work with leadership and operational oversight. As the senior technician on site, you'll be responsible for the day‑to‑day control of workshop activities while also carrying out maintenance and repair work across a varied fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Key responsibilities of the workshop controller
* Oversee daily workshop operations including job allocation, service scheduling, and workflow management
* Maintain high standards of quality assurance and ensure all work is properly authorised and recorded
* Diagnose faults and carry out maintenance and repair work on light and heavy vehicles
* Ensure all job cards and paperwork are accurate, complete, and processed in a timely manner
* Manage MOT scheduling (minimum three months in advance) and maintain up-to-date service schedules
* Monitor vehicle maintenance history to identify warranty and repeat work
* Coordinate parts ordering and maintain effective stock control
* Ensure excellent customer and colleague communication at all times
* Rebook incomplete work and keep customers informed of updates
* Support and manage team rotas, including standby and weekend cover
* Escalate unresolved or urgent issues to the Contract Manager
* Provide technical guidance and support to workshop staff
* Assist across other workshop locations when required
Skills & experience required for this workshop controller role
* Proven experience in heavy vehicle workshop and maintenance environments
* Ability to maintain a mixed fleet of light and heavy vehicles
* Strong leadership skills with experience motivating and organising teams
* Knowledge of municipal fleet operations
* Experience managing parts, suppliers, and stock levels
* Strong administrative skills with accurate and timely paperwork completion
* Confident using vehicle management systems
* Excellent communication and customer service skills
Qualifications
* Automotive apprenticeship or HNC in Automotive Engineering (or equivalent)
* HGV Licence (Category C) – essential
* CPC qualification in Road Haulage – desirable
