Overview

As we continue to expand, we are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our team. The role requires someone who is clinically experienced, proactive, organized, and able to take initiative. Working in a smaller team means your role will be highly valued and varied; you will have the opportunity to make a real impact, help shape the future of our nursing team, and contribute meaningfully to patient care and service development. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a collaborative setting but is equally confident working autonomously, managing priorities, and supporting others in a leadership capacity.

This role involves delivering phlebotomy and HCA core provisions, supporting the nursing team and the practice, and working with EMIS and general practice operations.

Job responsibilities

Main duties & responsibilities

Working under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the Health Care Assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care. Provide general assistance to the practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors, either in person or via the telephone.

HCA duties & treatment room duties

* New Patient Health checks
* ECG recording
* Chaperoning duties
* To assist in the processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs and Nurses
* Testing urine specimens using appropriate equipment and recording as requested
* Ensuring that specimens brought in by patients or taken by doctors or nurses are ready for collection by pathology service
* Maintaining stocks of examination instruments and specimen collection materials, stocking rooms for consumables, and supporting the ordering process (checking expiry dates)
* Correctly storing instruments
* Maintaining vaccine stock levels and stock rotation as agreed with the practice nurses
* Maintaining and ordering drugs, instruments and clinical supplies
* Raising awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
* Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being
* Performing other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to meet the needs of the practice

Minor operations

From time to time doctors carry out minor operations for patients (e.g., contraception implants, removing ingrown toenails, coil fittings). You will be required to assist GPs in Minor Ops: getting instruments ready and laid out on trolley, organizing dressings from stock, and clearing away used instruments.

Phlebotomy

To assist in providing phlebotomy services for the practice, as required. You will be responsible for running your own Phlebotomy Clinic in accordance with practice needs. This includes checking request forms, patient identification, equipment, drawing blood, and labeling bottles. You will take blood samples for patients requiring regular tests (e.g., for Diabetes, Hypertension, CHD, and certain medications) and perform measurements such as INR, blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, ECG, and injections under PSD guidance. NHS Health Checks and New Patient Health Checks may also be part of duties.

Assisting the nursing team, GPs, and other clinicians as requested.

Other tasks

Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the Partners and Managers. Confidentiality, Health & Safety, Equality and Diversity, Personal/Professional Development, Quality, Communication, and Contribution to the Implementation of Services policies are integral to the role and daily practice.
