Overview

To participate in all elements of the SCPHN programme both theory and practice and ensure completion of all approved programme documentation and assessments within the time scale.


Responsibilities

* Organise regular planned tripartite and bipartite meetings with your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor.
* Fully participate in the teaching strategies used by the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor.
* Develop professional knowledge and competence pertaining to Health Visiting and relevant to safe standards of professional practice.
* Accurately record information within SystemOne records, documenting cumulative risk and actioning appropriately. Records to be contemporaneous and recorded timely as per trust policy.
* Maintain confidentiality at all times. Access to electronic devices to be kept safe and stored as per trust policy.
* Under supervision of the Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor, manage delegated workload/caseload and supervise staff if appropriate.
* Undertake nursing and public health duties under direct and indirect supervision of the Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor.
* Act in accordance with all Trust policies.
* Develop skills in nurse prescribing, leading to qualification as a community prescriber, with demonstration of safe and effective prescribing.


Programme Context and Eligibility

The role is part of a regional campaign to recruit registered nurses or midwives to undertake a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - School Nurse training programme starting September 2026. The Band 5 Student School Nurse post provides a structured pathway into the Health Visiting profession, combining academic study with supervised practice in community settings. Sponsor organisations may include the following:

If applying as an Internal Applicant, state clearly on the application that you are an employee with your manager's support to apply for a secondment. A decision will be made on suitability to proceed onto this course in collaboration with your employer if invited for interview. We also accept self-funding applicants or applicants from Private, Independent and Voluntary Organisations. Our team will help secure a suitable practice placement.

Application Requirements

* Details of an academic referee and a professional referee
* Your NMC registered nurse (level 1) or NMC registered midwife PIN
* Evidence of a health-related Honours degree at 2:2 or above or evidence of completed or current study of the Leeds Beckett Professional Portfolio Development module
* Your recent engagement in CPD activities, including level and relevance to your application
* Evidence that you meet the criteria in the Person Specification
* Either confirmation of employment with the trust and manager's support OR sponsor/placement choice ranked in order of preference

You must have a current Nursing or Midwifery registration and hold a first degree in a relevant subject (2:2 or above) OR equivalence via the Professional Portfolio Development module. The module commences late January 2026. Applicants for the Apprenticeship route must provide GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C. Internal staff may discuss a secondment with their employer if offered a place on the programme. If confirmed, students on this course are eligible for a paid salary and course fees paid by the NHS.

Travel requirements: Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be able to travel independently and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes throughout the course. Adjustments will be made in accordance with the Equality Act (2010).

You will join a supportive team and will qualify as a Band 6 School Nurse after successful completion. Internal secondment policy and related terms apply.
