Overview

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust seeks full-time anaesthesia specialists with an interest in obstetric anaesthesia and general theatres to join the anaesthetic and critical care department at The Rotherham Hospital. The post-holder will work with a team of 31 consultants, 15 associate specialists and specialty doctors, clinical fellows and trainees. The department supports undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has Associate Teaching Hospital status with the University of Sheffield Medical School.


Main duties

* Provide perioperative care autonomously across surgical specialties: general surgery (including laparoscopic colorectal), orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, urology, ENT, maxillofacial, breast surgery, ophthalmology and obstetrics.
* Focus on obstetric and general theatre work, with some evening and weekend clinical activity.
* Support and develop preoperative assessment services.
* Train resident doctors; participate in clinical effectiveness and governance activities; contribute to developing and delivering new services.

Job responsibilities

The Department:

* Currently 31 substantive consultant anaesthetists, 11 specialty doctors, 2 senior clinical fellows and 2 specialists. Training rotation from South Yorkshire Anaesthetic Training Rotation. Foundation Year 2 doctor on a 4-month rotation within critical care.
* Non-consultant colleagues in senior roles; opportunities for senior roles such as clinical lead and subspecialty lead roles.

Elective Surgery:

* Each theatre session is 1.33 PAs (5 hours 20 minutes), including 1 hour for preoperative assessment and postoperative care.
* Theatre start times: 0830 (morning), 1345 (afternoon); some lists may be all-day.
* Surgical specialties include general surgery, orthopaedics and trauma, gynaecology, urology, ENT, maxillofacial, breast surgery, ophthalmology.

Critical Care and Obstetric anaesthesia:

* Regional anaesthesia service with higher and advanced training modules; paediatric exodontia anaesthesia and dental sedation services; ECT referral centre; regular cardioversion service.
* Critical Care Unit: around 630 admissions/year; Level 3 and Level 2 beds; ICU and HDU co-located; dedicated weekday consultant cover; weekend on-call arrangements across teams.

Training & Teaching:

* Opportunity to participate in anaesthetic training, module development, supervision and appraisal; established trainee teaching programme; FICE accreditation pathway in ICU consultants.

Out-of-hours and The Post:

* Out-of-hours on-call structure described; post requires 8.5 PA of clinical activity per week and 1.5 PA of SPA; potential for additional SPA roles.

Responsibilities by area:

* Obstetrics: perioperative care for obstetric patients, labour ward anaesthetic support, high-risk obstetric clinic development, supervision of junior staff.
* General (General Surgery, OMFS, Urology, ENT): perioperative care for elective/semi-elective theatre patients; supervision and teaching; weekend trauma support.


Qualifications and experience

Essential:

* Basic medical degree; Full GMC registration with licence to practice; provide GMC registration number.
* UK ALS/ATLS/APLS or equivalent (advanced life support training).
* Minimum of 12 years medical work since primary qualification, with at least 6 years in a relevant specialty (Specialty Doctor or SAS grades) or equivalent from other grades.

Desirable:

* FRCA or equivalent specialist qualification; evidence of consultant-level rota experience; experience in pre-op assessment clinic; regional anaesthesia experience for upper and lower limbs; RCOA e-learning.

Other criteria and recruitment details:
