Overview
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Biomedical Support Worker on a 9-month fixed-term contract. This role spans both the Clinical Biochemistry and Microbiology departments, supporting the processing of Serology blood specimens. The role is hands-on and focuses on contributing to patient care in a diagnostic science environment.
Although previous laboratory or hospital experience is advantageous, it is not essential as comprehensive training will be provided. If offered internally, the position will be considered a secondment.
Responsibilities
* Book in and receip t samples, prepare them for analysis, and load/unload onto analysers.
* Handle specimens requiring confirmatory testing and support the day-to-day operations of the Clinical Biochemistry and Microbiology departments.
* Assist Higher Biomedical Support Workers, Biomedical Scientists and senior Biomedical Scientists in delivering a cohesive service.
* Support the Blood Borne Virus Opt-out Testing Initiative at Bedford and Luton & Dunstable Hospital sites as required.
* Follow policies, procedures, and the Quality Management System to ensure compliance with current UKAS standards and relevant legislation.
* Contribute to departmental audits, risk management activities, and incident reporting as appropriate.
* Assist in training of other support staff when required.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
* O Level GCEs in Science or equivalent knowledge of hospital laboratory procedures
* Some experience in a Hospital Laboratory environment or demonstrated ability to organise own work
* Ability to relay test results to clinicians and other staff and answer queries
* Fundamental Health & Safety knowledge
* Specimen preparation and data entry/standard keyboard skills
* Personal integrity, drive, determination, and flexibility
Desirable
* A Level GCE
