Offer description

Overview

Tony Gee is seeking a lead appointment for the development and delivery of environmental services across all sectors. The role involves providing direct advice to projects, upskilling existing staff, and specifying and working with specialist subconsultants. Location: we are accepting applications for all our UK offices. Tony Gee is renowned for engineering excellence—delivering practical, buildable designs across Rail, Highways, Power, and Marine. As environmental considerations become central to project success, there is growing demand for integrated environmental services in both early stage planning and detailed design and delivery.

We pride ourselves on creative, excellent engineering to achieve affordable and buildable solutions for our clients. It is the quality of our engineers and company reputation that gives clients confidence we will deliver the engineering answer; we want our clients to experience the same confidence when it comes to managing risks to delivery associated with planning conditions and environmental requirements.

We are looking for a driven and forward‑thinking individual to lead this growth area and inspire client confidence that Tony Gee can deliver high‑quality environmental outcomes. This is a unique opportunity to shape and expand our environmental offering, working alongside our engineers to deliver holistic, sustainable solutions that meet evolving client expectations and regulatory requirements.

Through this role, we see an opportunity to set the standard for what integrated environmental and engineering excellence looks like. The successful candidate will lead and develop Tony Gee's environmental service offering, currently delivered primarily through our supply chain, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in so far as described below.

Responsibilities

* Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs): manage the delivery and integration of EIA chapters produced by subconsultants and in‑house teams. An EIA Coordinator role may be provided by a subconsultant or by the candidate.
* Interpret and integrate EIA requirements into engineering deliverables and provide interface between in‑house leads for technical disciplines (including flood, contamination and transport).
* Directly or via subconsultants, manage the delivery and integration of environmental consents and planning conditions, supported by technical leads as required.
* Oversee ecology deliverables (identify and plan surveys, interpret and report results, advise on integration of constraints into engineering deliverables/construction projects, including licensing and mitigation requirements).
* Oversee landscape architecture and arboricultural deliverables.
* Provide advice on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Nature Positive solutions.

Role Focus and Delivery

* Work across sectors with a focus on Power & Energy and Highways; collaborate with Heads of Sectors and Sector Leadership Teams to identify and prioritise environmental services requirements and opportunities for in‑house delivery aligned with Tony Gee’s core engineering portfolio.
* Lead a new Environmental Services function to strengthen delivery to clients and integrate environmental services with the engineering offering.
* Develop relationships with existing and new clients to secure further appropriate work, and work with the Supply Chain Manager and Sector/Office Leads to develop a strategic supply chain for environmental services.

Requirements and Skills

* Sound technical skills with detailed knowledge of relevant UK statutory regulations and policies; strong communication and interpersonal skills; client‑facing ability; and capable team leadership.
* Willingness and ability to develop the knowledge and technical skills of staff.
* The position offers potential progression to more senior Director grades.

Role Remit

* Act as Environmental Services Discipline Manager or Director on multidisciplinary projects requiring leadership of environmental services to high‑quality standards and financial targets.
* Review technical deliverables produced in‑house or by the supply chain across multiple concurrent projects.
* Lead day‑to‑day management, direction and training of staff while undertaking project work; act as a role model within the company.
* Develop client and subconsultant relationships and identify potential work and partnering opportunities.
* Coordinate with engineers/consultants across Tony Gee’s offices and delivery teams; manage proposals and project work with clients.
* Specify and manage specialist environmental services required to fulfil Tony Gee’s scope; for in‑house services, prepare fee budgets, proposals and resource requirements.
* Identify and manage risks to agreed acceptable levels and support the Head of Sustainability in development and delivery.

Experience

* Required Experience: Leading and developing teams and business subunits; independently scoping, managing and delivering environmental services commissions for a range of clients including Local Authorities and developers; experience with UK Town and Country Planning (Environmental Impact Assessment) regulations; ability to interface with planning/engineering disciplines on environmental plans and impact assessments; experience with LEMPs, LBMPs, HMMPs and CEMPs; design and specification of core EIA chapter disciplines (ideally ecology or landscape architecture); liaison with stakeholders and relevant statutory bodies (e.g. Environment Agency, Natural England); track record of delivering biodiversity net gain for clients.
* Desirable Experience/Skills: Experience with planning processes and delivery of planning applications; experience with Design and Build schemes; familiarity with NEC, ACE contracts; understanding of related civil engineering disciplines; knowledge of BIM protocols in BS EN ISO 19650.
* Qualifications: CEnv or equivalent with a recognised institution (e.g. IEMA/ISEP, ICE, CIEEM, CIWEM); approximately 15+ years of experience or demonstrated ability to lead complex environmental initiatives.

Behavioral Competencies

* Excellent communication
* Ability to manage time, people, budgets and risks
* Ability to manage a team to achieve deadlines
