About Aspire Alternative Provision
Aspire Alternative Provision supports young people aged 11–16 who have been excluded from mainstream education or are at risk of exclusion. We provide a trauma-informed, inclusive, and nurturing environment at our site located in Walsall ensuring our learners—many of whom have SEND and SEMH needs—receive tailored academic, emotional, and pastoral support.
Role Summary
We are seeking a committed, compassionate, and resilient Student Mentor to join our team at our Walsall site. This role is pivotal in supporting our learners both emotionally and academically, building trusted relationships, and maintaining a safe and supportive environment. You will play a key part in upholding safeguarding practices, managing behaviour positively, and promoting engagement with learning.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide daily mentoring and emotional support to students with SEND and SEMH needs
* Build positive, consistent relationships with students to promote trust, regulation, and engagement
* Support students in accessing their academic and vocational learning
* Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours using trauma-informed and restorative approaches
* Supervise students throughout the day, including during unstructured times such as breaks and transitions
* Record and report safeguarding concerns promptly and accurately using CPOMS in line with Aspire's safeguarding procedures
* Work in collaboration with teaching staff, pastoral leads, and external professionals
* Contribute to the creation and review of Individual Learning Plans and Behaviour Support Plans
* Model professional boundaries and appropriate communication at all times
* Support with attendance monitoring and follow-up where appropriate
* Participate in risk assessments and support with off-site activities when required
Person Specification
Essential:
* Experience working with young people with SEND, particularly SEMH, ASD, or ADHD
* Confident in managing challenging behaviour using de-escalation techniques
* Experience using CPOMS to record safeguarding or behaviour incidents
* Understanding of the statutory safeguarding framework and thresholds
* Committed to working within safeguarding and behaviour policies at all times
* Willingness to undertake ongoing training in safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, behaviour management, and SEND
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure
* Reliable, proactive, and a strong team player
Desirable:
* Relevant qualifications (e.g., in youth work, education, or behaviour support)
* Previous experience working in alternative provision or PRU settings
* First Aid training
* Driving licence and access to a vehicle (some flexibility between sites may be required)
