Role: SEND Specialist Practitioner – SPLD Specialism

Location: Shuttleworth College – Old Warden and Central Bedfordshire College – Dunstable Kingsway Campus

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £35,894 and £47,971 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 35 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, Teacher’s Pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

About the role:

We are currently seeking a SEND Specialist Practitioner to join our Foundation Learning and Additional Learning Support department at The Bedford College Group.

As a SEND Specialist Practitioner, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

1. Specialist SEND Intervention & Delivery – Plan and deliver 1:1 sessions, small group teaching and workshops for learners with SEND (Neurodiversity, SEMH, SpLD), supporting access to curriculum and fostering independence.
2. Inclusive Practice & Staff Development – Support curriculum staff to embed inclusive teaching strategies, facilitate CPD and promote disability awareness to enhance teaching, learning and assessment.
3. Innovative Learning & Assistive Technology – Apply specialist teaching approaches and utilise accessible technology to remove barriers to learning and improve engagement, progress and independence.
4. Progress Monitoring, EHCP & Collaboration – Track learner progress and attendance, contribute to EHCP reviews, set targets and work collaboratively with ALS teams, teaching staff and external agencies.
5. Professional Practice, Engagement & Compliance – Maintain accurate records, build effective relationships, support college activities and uphold safeguarding, EDI, health & safety and CPD standards.

About you:

6. Qualifications & SEND Specialism – A Levels with GCSE English and maths, alongside a Degree or Level 5 qualification in a SEND specialism (ASD, SpLD, SEMH), supported by strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
7. SEND Expertise & Learner Support – Extensive experience supporting young people with SEND and EHCPs in FE or similar settings, including one‑to‑one support, leading meetings and addressing diverse learning needs.
8. Communication, Reporting & Professional Practice – Excellent communication skills across all formats, able to produce high‑quality reports, maintain confidentiality and build effective relationships with students, staff and external stakeholders.
9. Organisation, IT & Collaborative Working – Highly organised with strong IT and administrative skills, able to prioritise workload, meet deadlines and work effectively with teaching and support teams to improve learner outcomes.
10. Professional Values, Flexibility & Safeguarding – Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and College values, adaptable and proactive with a learner‑centred approach, flexibility to travel across sites and dedication to ongoing CPD.
