The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, with responsibility for an annual budget of over £10bn, the Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence and one of its largest operating centres who employ around 12,000 Civil Servants located at over 300 locations supporting the 110K regular and reserve soldiers across the Army. This Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff.
Our Specialist Instructional role is an exciting opportunity to join the Civil Service and deliver key outputs for the benefit of the Army and Defence. You will have the opportunity to work directly with military colleagues to enable key outputs and can take advantage of training and development opportunities available to enhance your skills and career pathway in the Civil Service.
We provide Leadership and Resilience training which is key to improving both the physical and moral fighting power of Service Personnel by placing them in situations of controlled exposure to risk which are specifically and carefully designed to build courage, collaboration and teamwork whilst also testing and improving physical and mental strength and capability. All of this is key to ensuring the Army is equipped with sufficient capability and fighting power to win wars. Our Specialist Instructional Officer post is integral to delivering Adventurous Leadership and Resilience Training within the Army Adventurous Training Wing Inverness.
The centre consists of the Headquarters and 5 branches that are dispersed across the UK, Germany and Cyprus delivering numerous Adventurous Training courses to the field Army.
Role details
This is a part-time role advertised at 18.5 hours a week.
* Instruct on adventurous training courses and concentrations
* Implement Training Risk assessments procedures
* Deliver professional safe training in accordance with procedures
* Manage training accidents/incidents in liaison with the relevant emergency services and ensure an all-informed net
* Write reports and action plans on all students under instruction
* Complete external invalidation processes on request
* Contribute to instructor Quality Assurance training audit visits at regular intervals to ensure programmed courses are delivered safely to achieve standard methodology
* Maintain training currency through adherence to a Personal Development Plan and achievement of the relevant courses
* Support Risk assurance checks and Peer reviews
* Ensure currency in First Aid through possession of an in-date certificate

Our Specialist Instructional Officers are required to work independently and as part of a team. You will have good IT and communication skills. You will be versatile with a flexible approach to accommodate the needs of our other branches whilst adhering to policy and guidelines.
You will be required to have an enhanced ability to teach and hold the following essential professional qualifications:
* Summer mountaineering and climbing instructor
* Kayak/canoe instructor
* Mountain biking instructor
* Caving Instructor
* Outdoor First Aid
A Full UK Driving Licence (category B) is required to undertake transportation of students to adventurous training locations. This will include towing trailers as required adhering to regulations, so a category B+E licence would also be desirable, but training can be provided if not held, Summer mountaineering and climbing instructor
