Job Title: Civil Design Engineer / Senior Civil Design Engineer

Location: Gateshead (Hybrid Working Available)

Salary: Civil Design Engineer (4+ years’ experience): £35,000 – £40,000
Senior Civil Design Engineer (8–10 years’ experience): £40,000 – £50,000

Type: Full-Time, Permanent


Overview

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Civil Design Engineer or Senior Civil Design Engineer to join a busy, multidisciplinary consultancy team. This desk-based role focuses on the design of drainage systems, flood risk assessments, and road layouts, with an emphasis on residential housing developments. This is an ideal position for a proactive engineer looking to take ownership of projects and further their career in a supportive, team-oriented environment.


Key Responsibilities

* Manage civil engineering projects from feasibility and planning through detailed design and construction.
* Produce Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategy Reports.
* Design roads, sewers, and plot drainage, including setting FFLs, earthworks, retaining walls, etc.
* Prepare and present high-quality technical drawings.
* Liaise with statutory authorities (e.g., highways, water companies, LLFAs) for approvals, including Section 38 and Section 104 agreements.
* Attend project and client meetings.
* Coordinate with clients, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders.
* Collaborate with internal teams across disciplines to deliver projects efficiently.


Essential Requirements

* Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience in civil engineering design.
* Minimum HNC qualification in Civil Engineering or related field.
* Strong knowledge of UK planning procedures and industry design standards (e.g., Sewerage Sector Guidance, DMRB, MfS, Local Authority guidelines).
* Experience using civil engineering design software: MicroDrainage or Causeway Flow (essential), AutoCAD Civils 3D, Causeway PDS / Live Design.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Full UK driving licence.


Desirable Attributes

* Experience working with residential developers.
* Chartered or working towards Chartership (e.g., ICE).
* Existing contacts or experience within the North East construction sector.


Additional Notes

This is a design office-based role – applicants with only site engineering experience (e.g., site managers or site engineers) will not be considered. UK-based experience (minimum 2–3 years) is required for visa applicants. Candidates must have direct experience designing drainage systems using appropriate software tools.
