Medical Laboratory Assistant (Microbiology)

The Role

The role will involve collecting, preparing materials and clinical specimens for analysis and safe disposal of clinical waste. You will register patient related information onto Laboratory Information System or other manual systems. You will be required to work on reception duties, taking telephone queries from staff from other departments and external agencies.

You will provide assistance to the Biomedical Scientist for provision of a laboratory service, performing specific laboratory tests with senior staff available for reference. Pathology based posts will receive, store and release deceased patients from the mortuary.

You will be required to also assist in the training of new or less experienced staff.



What we'll need you to bring

* Standard grade English and Science subject
* Ongoing personal development in subject through attendance at appropriate meetings and courses
* Good understanding of biomedical science
* Knowledge of anatomy and physiology (but training will be provided)
* Knowledge/awareness of infection control policies and procedures
* Good keyboard skills
* Manual dexterity
* Flexibility around start and finish times
* This post would require overnight working
* The job involves both Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays

Please note for all vacancies where a driving licence is required this must be a full UK/EU/EEA licence.


It would be great if you also have

* ONC/HNC in biological Sciences or equivalent
* Knowledge of NHS laboratory environment and biomedical science
* Work experience in Microbiology laboratory
* Good communication skills particularly oral, written and presentation
* Ability to work under pressure

Fixed Term for 1 year

37 hours
Please note this is a fixed term post for 1 year. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment. The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post.


Location and Working Pattern

This role will be based in Microbiology, location to be determined. Whilst this advertisement may be for a specific post(s) in a particular location, applicants who are shortlisted for interview may be considered for similar vacancies in alternative locations.
