Overview
To deliver autonomous advanced level practice encompasses aspects of education, research and leadership but is firmly grounded in direct compassionate care provision or clinical work with patients, families, and wider populations.
The post holder’s own practice should be developed to an advanced level, whereby they can directly or indirectly influence all aspects of care and management of patients SACT care pathway.
The post holder will lead on chemotherapy development and implementation of high quality, safe and effective systemic anti-cancer therapy service.
Responsibilities
* The post holder will be responsible for the planning and organisation of a chemotherapy service and to strategically advise Trust wide where chemotherapy is delivered.
* Responsible for cytotoxic policy development and implementation.
* Provide leadership and support to the Chemotherapy service.
* Undertake clinical review of patients, coordinate and manage transitions of care and support for the patient and family/carer across the chemotherapy treatment pathway.
* To promote and develop cross boundary specialty specific care pathways in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
* To participate in developing and providing education and programmes in the management of problems for patients and carers within the chemotherapy unit.
* To provide mentorship assessing staff SACT competence.
* To undertake Nurse-led chemotherapy pre-assessment clinics, PICC line insertion procedures and toxicity follow-up clinics.
* To ensure safe delivery and implementation of chemotherapy in relation to standards set out by National, regional and Trust guidance.
* To be the Trust nominated lead nurse for cytotoxic chemotherapy issues and to lead on service development and continuous improvement.

Service Context
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities.
A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.
Additional Responsibilities
* The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the safe delivery and implementation of chemotherapy in relation to the standards set out by National, regional and Trust guidance.

* To provide clinical leadership and knowledge in developing chemotherapy service in close collaboration with chemotherapy ward manager and operational service lead.
* To promote and develop cross boundary speciality specific care pathways in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
* To participate in developing and providing education and programmes in the management of problems for patients and carers within the chemotherapy unit.
* To provide mentorship assessing staff SACT competence.
* To undertake Nurse-led chemotherapy preassessment clinics, PICC line insertion procedures and toxicity follow-up clinics.
Governance, Audit and Research
Critically appraise and synthesize the outcomes of relevant research, evaluations and audits and apply the information when seeking to improve practice. Develop and review chemotherapy specific protocols and guidelines relevant to practice and ensure these are accessible to staff in clinical areas.
Practice Standards and Leadership
Provide expert nursing advice and support to other health professionals responsible for the care of chemotherapy patients. Lead effective communication with the multi-professional team and Chemotherapy navigator regarding patient pathways on booking system. Deliver specific programmes of education, and training to health care professionals. Act as a lead specialist resource for patients or carers providing information on agencies/organisations who are able to offer support. Demonstrate advanced empathetic interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients and carers throughout the cancer pathway. Demonstrate advanced practice in holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of chemotherapy care with high levels of autonomy and advocacy.
