Technical/Design Lead - Power Business Unit

Our client is a prominent UK infrastructure contractor is seeking a high-calibre Technical/Design Lead to take strategic ownership of all engineering and design activities across its rapidly expanding Power Business Unit.
This is a critical leadership position, responsible not just for individual project delivery, but for setting the technical direction, standards, and capability for all power infrastructure schemes delivered by the business unit, including transmission, distribution, and grid connections.

The Role
* Technical Strategy & Standards: Defining and implementing the overarching technical strategy for the Power Business Unit.
* Establishing and maintaining internal design standards, processes, and best practices to ensure consistency, quality, and adherence to all relevant UK codes and DNO specifications.
* Design Oversight & Assurance: Providing high-level technical governance and assurance across multiple live projects and bid submissions simultaneously.
* Reviewing and approving complex design packages (e.g., substation layouts, protection schemes, cable routes) to mitigate technical risk.
* Capability Development: Leading the recruitment, mentoring, and professional development of the design and engineering teams within the business unit, enhancing internal technical competence and capacity.
* Client Engagement: Acting as the senior technical representative for the business unit with key clients (DNOs, Developers) and consultants, influencing specifications and presenting technical solutions during tender and delivery phases.
* Innovation and Efficiency: Driving Value Engineering and promoting the adoption of new technologies and digital tools (e.g., BIM, advanced simulation) to improve design efficiency and project delivery performance across the portfolio.
* Compliance: Ensuring the business unit fully adheres to statutory requirements, including CDM regulations (Principal Designer duties), health and safety legislation, and environmental policies.
The Person
* A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status (e.g., CEng, MIET) or equivalent professional recognition is essential.
* Extensive, demonstrable experience (typically 10+ years) in a senior technical leadership or Head of Design role within the UK power infrastructure sector, covering both design and construction phases.
* Deep commercial and technical understanding of the UK power market, including regulatory drivers and technical requirements for EHV/HV assets.
* Proven ability to lead and strategically manage a large, multi-disciplinary engineering function operating across diverse projects.
* Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, capable of influencing senior stakeholders internally and externally.
