Job Summary This role will provide crucial support to MCNC and its network engineering and operational teams in effectively maintaining the statewide MCNC fiber network. Key Roles and Responsibilities Ensure the fiber infrastructure complies with industry standards. Collaborate closely with contracted maintenance personnel retained by MCNC to support and serve NCREN customers. Represent MCNC in meetings with external entities, including the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Estimate costs for future expansions based on the existing fiber network. Conduct random inspections of network infrastructure, colocation facilities, and maintenance or repair activities. Manage multiple engineering vendors and their deliverables, including construction drawings for fiber relocations and capital builds. Direct maintenance and repair efforts for the fiber optic plant during damages or service outages by coordinating with external vendors and internal teams to ensure timely restoration. Oversee new construction projects in collaboration with contractors to maintain the network's integrity. Map the fiber network using GIS mapping software and create other design drawings as needed. Interpret and understand maps, drawings, and diagrams for Telecom OSP construction. Create and review fiber assignments (schematics), high-level designs, and low-level designs to support network operations. Communicate with project managers, permitting teams, and field personnel to deliver accurate results aligned with deadlines, client expectations, and JSI standards. Continuously improve job-related tasks, processes, technical knowledge, skills, and professional performance. Perform additional tasks as assigned by the manager or supervisor. Flexible Roles and Responsibilities N/A Qualifications and Education Requirements BS in Electrical Engineering or related degree or equivalent experience. 3 - 7 years of experience in the telecommunications field providing fiber design or field quality control inspection. Experience working in a carrier network or a large enterprise network. Experience using OTDR’s and reading trace files for testing and reporting purposes. Travel will be required statewide as needed as well as late evening and night work from time to time. Adherence to all OSHA, state, city/municipality safety requirements Wearing appropriate protective footwear and clothing while performing field operations will be required. The position may require frequent lifting or use of force to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work outdoors and drive in all types of weather. Must be able to sit, drive, stand, and walk for extended periods. Interface well with customers, professional service staff and other non-technical members of organizations Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills. Demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills Have aptitude for learning new technologies Ability to be nimble in day to day duties as priorities change relative to events beyond the employee’s or MCNC’s control. Flexibility to work non-typical hours. Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle. Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company. This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.
